Inleiding
WONINGBOUWCOMPLEX, vrijstaand gesitueerd aan de noordzijde van de Turfsingel en op de hoek met de Walstraat en de Gymnasiumstraat,bestaande uit in totaal 22 beneden- en bovenwoningen, gebouwd in 1937 in opdracht van de gemeente door S.J. Bouma in de stijl van de Delftse School. De woningen zijn thans nog als zodanig in gebruik.
Omschrijving
Het woningbouwcomplex is opgetrokken op een H-vormige plattegrond en telt drie bouwlagen met een zolderverdieping onder individuele tuitgevels met zadeldaken, belegd met een zwart geglazuurde Hollandse pan. Achter op de daken staan karakteristieke zware gemetselde schoorstenen met borden. De brede middenvleugel ligt circa acht meter achter de rooilijn van de Turfsingel. De lage muren aan de straat, de toegangspoorten, de galerijtrappen en de gevel van de begane grond zijn opgetrokken uit een zwartbruine gesinterde steen. De constructieve hoekdelen zijn vervaardigd van beton. De gevels van de eerste en tweede verdieping en de tuitgevels zijn opgetrokken uit een platte rode steen. De poortdoorgangen en de portieken op de begane grond zijn met een rondboog gesloten. De poorten zijn overkapt en gedekt met keramische leien. De een-, twee- of driedelige houten vensters hebben een kruisroedeverdeling en zijn rechtgesloten met een betonnen latei en een hanekam (anderhalfsteens). Twee grote trappen aan weerszijden van het complex leiden naar een galerij op de eerste verdieping waaraan de voordeuren liggen, die zijn gevat in een geprofileerd betonnen kader. Enkele vensters hebben houten luiken. In de geveltoppen zijn rondboogvensters aangebracht, muurankers en zaagtand metselverband. In de zuidelijke zijgeveltop is zeventiende-eeuws natuursteen materiaal gebruikt: barokke voluten, guirlandes, een tympaan en consoles. De achtergevel is grotendeels uit een (goedkopere) perssteen opgetrokken. Enkel de zichtbare gedeelten van de achtergeveltoppen zijn uit bruine baksteen opgetrokken.

HOUSING COMPLEX, freestanding situated on the north side of the Turfsingel and at the corner with the Walstraat and the Gymnasiumstraat, consisting of a total of 22 ground-floor and upper-floor dwellings, built in 1937 on behalf of the municipality by S.J. Bouma in the style of the Delft School. The dwellings are still currently in use as such.
Description
The housing complex is constructed on an H-shaped ground plan and comprises three storeys with an attic storey under individual spout gables with gabled roofs, covered with black glazed Dutch tile. Characteristic heavy masonry chimneys with boards stand at the rear of the roofs. The wide central wing is situated approximately eight metres behind the building line of the Turfsingel. The low walls at the street, the access gates, the gallery stairs and the ground-floor facade are constructed from a dark-brown sintered brick. The structural corner elements are made of concrete. The facades of the first and second storeys and the spout gables are constructed from a flat red brick. The gate passages and the porticos on the ground floor are closed with a rounded arch. The gates are roofed and covered with ceramic slates. The single, double or triple-section wooden windows have cross glazing bars and are closed straight with a concrete lintel and a dog-tooth course (one-and-a-half bricks). Two large staircases on either side of the complex lead to a gallery on the first storey where the front doors are situated, which are set in a profiled concrete frame. Some windows have wooden shutters. Rounded-arch windows are incorporated in the gable tops, wall anchors and sawtooth bond masonry. Seventeenth-century natural stone material has been used in the southern side-gable top: Baroque volutes, garlands, a tympanum and consoles. The rear facade is largely constructed from (cheaper) pressed brick. Only the visible sections of the rear gable tops are constructed from brown brick.
