Inleiding WOONHUIS MET BAKKERIJ, gesitueerd in de gesloten noordelijke gevelwand van de Nieuwe Sint Jansstraat, gebouwd in 1880 in een ingetogen classicistische bouwstijl. In het pand was vroeger een bakkerswinkel gevestigd. De voormalige, vrijstaande bakkerij achter het gebouw is van ondergeschikt belang. Het gebouw is thans in gebruik als woonhuis. Omschrijving Het brede woonhuis is opgetrokken op een rechthoekige plattegrond en telt twee bouwlagen onder een evenwijdig aan de rooilijn geplaatst schilddak, belegd met een grijze Hollandse pan. De gevel wordt aan de bovenzijde afgesloten door een houten lijst met een geprofileerde bakgoot. In het midden van het voordakschild bevindt zich een gemetselde kajuit met een gesneden houten daklijst. De voorgevel is zes raamtraveeën breed en opgemetseld uit een helderrode baksteen en voorzien van een gepleisterde plint. De hoofdingang in het midden bestaat uit een dubbele bewerkte voordeur met gietijzeren traliewerk en een tweeledig bovenlicht en heeft een houten omlijsting en kroonlijst aan de bovenzijde. Op de hoeken zijn enkelvoudige toegangen naar de bovenwoning geplaatst. De licht getoogde vensters zijn segmentboogvormig gesloten met hanekammen. De begane grond wordt afgesloten door een geprofileerde houten lijst. De verdiepingsvensters hebben een zes-ruitsroedeverdeling. De indeling van de achtergevel is grotendeels oorspronkelijk en bevat onder meer kleine vierkante vensters met rollagen en een gemetselde kajuit met houten hijsbalk. Waardering Woonhuis met bakkerij, met een brede bakstenen lijstgevel uit de tweede helft van de negentiende eeuw, van algemeen belang vanwege zijn cultuurhistorische en architectuurhistorische waarde vanwege de goede compositie van de voorgevel en vanwege de architectonische gaafheid van het exterieur. Bovendien vertegenwoordigt het gebouw een in de stad Groningen vrij zeldzaam voorkomend woonhuistype uit het laatste kwart van de negentiende eeuw.

RESIDENTIAL HOUSE WITH BAKERY, situated in the closed northern facade wall of the Nieuwe Sint Jansstraat, built in 1880 in a restrained classical building style. A baker's shop was formerly located in the building. The former, detached bakery behind the building is of subordinate importance. The building is currently in use as a residential house.
Description
The broad residential house is erected on a rectangular floor plan and comprises two storeys under a hipped roof placed parallel to the building line, covered with grey Dutch tiles. The facade is closed at the top by a wooden moulding with a profiled rain gutter. In the middle of the roof deck there is a built-up cupola with a carved wooden cornice. The front facade is six window bays wide and built of bright-red brick with a plastered plinth. The main entrance in the middle consists of a double worked front door with cast-iron grillwork and a two-part fanlight and has a wooden frame and cornice at the top. On the corners, simple entrances to the upper floor apartment are placed. The slightly arched windows are closed with segmental arches with decorative keystones. The ground floor is closed off by a profiled wooden moulding. The first-floor windows have a six-pane glazing bar division. The layout of the rear facade is largely original and contains, among other things, small square windows with voussoirs and a built-up cupola with a wooden hoist beam.
Valuation
Residential house with bakery, with a broad brick cornice-topped facade from the second half of the nineteenth century, of general importance because of its cultural-historical and architectural-historical value because of the good composition of the front facade and because of the architectural integrity of the exterior. Moreover, the building represents a type of residential house from the last quarter of the nineteenth century that is fairly rare in the city of Groningen.
