Description

Introduction TOWNHOUSE, markedly situated on the corner of the Stationsstraat and the Ganzevoortsingel and forming part of the nearly closed western facade wall of the Stationsstraat, consisting of late nineteenth-century representative townhouses, built in 1881 in a richly decorated, eclectic architectural style. The building is currently in use as a residential house with a practice. The rear facade has been renewed and partly extended and is of secondary importance. Description The striking building is erected on a plan which is essentially rectangular and comprises two storeys under a truncated hipped roof. The roof planes, which here and there step back in accordance with the risalits, are covered with slate. The facades are terminated by a flat roof list with paired consoles, which carry a profiled rain gutter. The corner section is crowned with a solid structure, which is crowned with an inset and truncated trapezoidal tower roof. Against the roof deck shield of this is placed a zinc oeil de boeuf. The tower roof is decorated with cast iron ornaments. At the corner the building is bevelled and slightly projecting a diagonally oriented corner bay has been created. Outside the corner bay the building is four bays wide and one bay deep. The bays are clearly indicated in the architecture by means of mirror-interrupted block sequences on the ground floor and paired, fluted pilasters on the storey. Like all other decorative work this is executed in stucco. Above the plastered plinth the parapet of the ground floor is erected in reddish-brown brick; the remaining masonry is enlivened with stucco speckled layers. From the long facade the two centre bays spring forward. In the left of those two is the entrance section with hardstone step of three treads placed. The straight-headed windows have stretches with voussoirs and keystones; on the storey the keystones are provided with female heads. On the storey the outer bays of the long facade and before the corner bay have semicircular balconies. The fan-shaped undersides have ox heads which also serve as keystones of the underlying windows. Against the short facade is a broad rectangular balcony, resting on consoles. Like the previous one this is provided with a balustrade. Internally still of importance the stucco ceilings of the living rooms in the corner section and the hall provided with richly ornamented stucco work with worked wooden stair. Appraisal TOWNHOUSE, plastically formed in a richly decorated, eclectic architectural style, characteristic of the architecture of the last quarter of the nineteenth century, of general importance owing to its cultural-historical and architectural-historical value on account of the aesthetic qualities of the design which are expressed in the exuberant decorations of the facades and roof. Moreover, the building, forming part of similar, eclectic adjoining development on the Stationsstraat, by its situation on the corner of two streets and by its position in a sight axis over the Emmaplein to the north forms an important architectural element in its surroundings.
