Introduction SCHOOL BUILDING, situated at the corner of the Nieuwe Kijk in 't Jatstraat and the Grote Kruisstraat with a spacious forecourt with two old trees and wrought-iron fencing, built in 1868 as the Royal H.B.S. as the second H.B.S. in the city of Groningen to the design of architect H. Description

The monumental building is erected on an L-shaped ground plan and consists of two elongated, mutually perpendicular wings of two storeys under gently sloping hipped roofs, tiled with a grey corrugated tile. The northern wing is eleven window bays wide. The eastern wing is nine window bays wide. The chamfered middle section with the main entrance between the wings is three window bays wide. The facades are erected from reddish-brown brick and provided with a hard-stone parapet. The side wings contain on the courtyard side tall, segmental-arch closed windows with an eight-pane glazing bars. The windows have 'eyebrows' of orange-red brick at the top. The lower panes of the windows have a cross glazing pattern. The storeys are separated from each other by a broad cordon band. The two side pavilions of the wings are crowned by tympana with stucco reliefs with floral motifs. The richer treatment of the pavilions returns in the dressing of the windows, which are provided with profiled stucco moulding with architraves on consoles. The windows of the ground floor rest on a continuous, hard-stone sub-window-sill string. The eastern facade of the eastern side wing on the street side is fifteen bays wide and contains closed windows and a series of blank windows with rounded upper corners and 'eyebrows' of orange-red brick.
