Inleiding VILLA, vrijstaand gesitueerd in het noordwestelijke kwadrant van het het Emmaplein, gebouwd in 1892 in opdracht van Mr. B. ten Bruggencate naar ontwerp van architect J.P. Hazeu in een rijk versierde, eclectische bouwstijl. Het gebouw is sinds de jaren vijftig van deze eeuw in gebruik geweest als kantoor en daartoe inwendig aangepast. Het gebouw is recent (1993) gerestaureerd en thans in gebruik als kantoor. Omschrijving Het gebouw is opgetrokken op een rechthoekige plattegrond en bestaat uit een souterrain met twee bouwlagen onder een afgeknot schilddak, gedekt met leien in Maasdekking waarin ter decoratie een band met schubdekking is opgenomen. Het dakschilden van de risalieten zijn voorzien van rijk versierde kajuiten met tympanen, pinakels op de hoeken en gezwenkte wangen. Kleine halfronde daklichten met zinken spitsen verlichten de zolderverdieping. De gevel wordt afgesloten door een kroonlijst met tandlijst die een geprofileerde bakgoot draagt, die op de hoeken wordt gedragen door bewerkte consoles. Een gevelsprong op de westelijke hoek is opgevuld met een aardige dubbelhoge, rechthoekige serre van hout en glas. De uit rode baksteen opgetrokken gevels hebben gepleisterde hoeken en risalieten en zijn verlevendigd met dorpelbanden van kunstzandsteen. Het souterrain met kleine rechtgesloten vensters is zwaar gebosseerd. De begane grond bevat rechtgesloten vensters met strekken en bewerkte sluitstenen en vensters met geprofileerd lijstwerk en architraven. Description The building is constructed on a rectangular plan and consists of a basement with two storeys under a truncated hipped roof, covered with slate in Maas bond with a decorative band of shingle pattern inserted. The roof pediments of the risalits are fitted with richly decorated pavilions with tympana, pinnacles at the corners and curved side pieces. Small semicircular roof lights with zinc spires light the attic storey. The facade is finished with a cornice with a dentil band which carries a moulded gutter, which at the corners is supported by carved consoles. A facade recession on the western corner is filled with a charming double-height rectangular conservatory of wood and glass. The facades constructed of red brick have plastered corners and risalits and are enlivened with stone bands of artificial sandstone. The basement with small square-topped windows is heavily rusticated. The ground floor contains square-topped windows with lintels and carved voussoirs and windows with moulded mouldings and architraves. The first-floor windows are alternately segmentally arched and square-topped with triangular or curved tympana. The southern risalit, which faces the square, contains on the first floor a wide balcony with balustrade on heavy scrolled consoles. The three-part windows are decorated with a pediment on consoles and fitted with scrolled ornaments. Valuation Villa, built in 1892 in a richly decorated eclectic style, typical of the last quarter of the nineteenth century, designed by architect J.P. Hazeu, of general importance because of its cultural-historical and architectural-historical value as a representative of the architectural style concepts of the end of the nineteenth century and because of the architectural integrity of the exterior. Moreover, the building, by its situation at the north-western quadrant of a roundabout and its position in a sight axis across the Emmaplein towards the north, forms an important element in the urban structure of the ring road series along the south side of the inner city of Groningen.
