Introduction VILLA, detached situated on the north side of the Zuiderpark opposite the Verbindingskanaal, built in 1881 on commission of K.H. Gaarlandt after design by the Groningen architects K. & H. Hoekzema in neo-classicistic style. The garden is bordered by a simple wrought-iron fence between cast-iron balusters. In 1906 a kitchen was added against the south facade. In 1924 a semicircular oriel was fitted on the bel étage of the east facade. Despite these alterations the building has retained its very monumental character. The interior is largely in original condition. The building is currently in use as room rental. Description The building is erected on a substantially square ground plan and consists of a basement and two storeys under a truncated hipped roof, covered with a flat black Frisian pan. The facades are finished with a flat, continuous cornice with moulded drip moulding. Above the central projection of the front facade a closed rectangular ship's cabin. Chimneys with original plates stand on the corners (front side). The rough-cast grey cement facades have fluted pilasters on the corners. The main entrance with worked double panel door is placed in the central projection of the north facade in a shallow portico with round arch on fluted pilasters and has a stone step with imitation natural stone railings and balustrades. Above the front door is a balcony on worked consoles and an open balustrade. The sash windows on the bel étage have simply moulded glazing bars with arched dormer tops and fanlights with leaded glass. The storey windows are rectangular. The west facade has a nice wooden conservatory with coloured leaded glass in the fanlights and a cast-iron staircase. Above the conservatory is a wooden balcony with baluster fence. The east facade contains on the bel étage a semicircular oriel. The south side has a rectangular extension of one storey with balcony. Internally the original structure, layout and decoration has been well preserved. Of importance are amongst others the hall with white marble floor, the original door frames and panel doors with coloured leaded glass, marble fireplaces, the wooden stairwell with wooden railings, balusters and worked wooden wainscoting and large stairwell window with coloured leaded glass and the tiled w.c. with blue and white tiles. Valuation VILLA, designed in a neo-classicistic architectural style, typical of the architecture from the last quarter of the nineteenth century, after design by the Groningen architects K. & H. Hoekzema, of general importance from an urban planning, cultural-historical and architectural-historical point of view as a perfect example of the characteristic villa construction, realised on the southern fortifications of the city of Groningen dismantled at the end of the nineteenth century.
