Inleiding VILLA, vrijstaand gesitueerd in het Zuiderpark, gebouwd in 1881 in opdracht van R.P. Cleveringa naar ontwerp van architect H. Beusekom in een rijk versierde, eclectische bouwstijl. Het terrein wordt deels omzoomd door een eenvoudig ijzeren hekwerk. Het gebouw is thans nog in gebruik als woonhuis. De dakkapellen met lessenaarsdaken zijn van later datum. Omschrijving Het gebouw is opgetrokken op een vierkante plattegrond en bestaat uit een souterrain en één bouwlaag onder een afgeknot schilddak, dat gedekt is met leien. Het souterrain is aan de zuid-oostzijde uitgebouwd tot een terras. De symmetrisch ingedeelde voorgevel is vijf traveeën breed en de zijgevels zijn drie traveeën breed. Alle gevels zijn witgepleisterd. De rechtgesloten vensters hebben een T-roedeverdeling en bevatten stuc lijstwerk en geprofileerde architraven. Voor het midden van de risalerende middentravee in de zuidgevel staat een portico met hardstenen stoep en twee paar gecanneleerde, gietijzeren zuilen met composietkapitelen; de kroonlijst is versierd met stuc rank- en loofwerk. Aan de binnenzijde van de portico zijn, aan weerszijden van de voordeur, in stuc een zestal pilasters met kapitelen aangebracht. De middentravee is opgebouwd tot een forse kajuit met openslaande deuren naar het balkon op de portico. De kajuit is eveneens voorzien van een zestal pilasters in stuc. Boven de middentravee van de oostgevel tegen de kap bevindt zich een zinken dakkapel met rondvenster en gebogen tympaan. Inwendig is de oorspronkelijke structuur, indeling en aankleding goed bewaardgebleven. Van belang onder meer de hal met eikenhouten trap en stuc decoraties en diverse, geornamenteerde stuc plafonds in de woonvertrekken. Waardering VILLA, opgetrokken in een typisch laat negentiende-eeuwse, eclectische bouwstijl naar ontwerp van architect H. Beusekom, van algemeen belang uit stedebouwkundig, cultuurhistorisch en architectuurhistorisch oogpunt als gaaf voorbeeld van de karakteristieke villabouw, gerealiseerd op de aan het einde van de negentiende eeuw geslechte zuidelijke vestingwerken van de stad Groningen.

Introduction VILLA, freestanding situated in the Zuiderpark, built in 1881 on commission of R.P. Cleveringa after design by architect H. Beusekom in a richly decorated, eclectic building style. The grounds are partly bordered by simple ironwork fencing. The building is still currently in use as a residential house. The roof dormers with catslide roofs are of later date. Description The building is erected on a square ground plan and comprises a basement and one storey under a truncated hipped roof, covered with slate. The basement is expanded to a terrace on the south-east side. The symmetrically arranged front facade is five bays wide and the side facades are three bays wide. All facades are rendered white. The straight-headed windows have T-shaped glazing bars and contain stucco moulding and moulded architraves. In front of the middle of the projecting centre bay in the south facade stands a portico with stone step and two pairs of fluted cast-iron columns with composite capitals; the cornice is decorated with stucco foliage and acanthus work. On the inside of the portico, on either side of the front door, six pilasters with capitals are applied in stucco. The centre bay is built up to a prominent cabin with double doors opening onto the balcony on the portico. The cabin is also provided with six pilasters in stucco. Above the centre bay of the east facade against the roof is a zinc roof dormer with round window and curved tympanum. Internally, the original structure, division and decoration are well preserved. Of importance among others the hall with oak staircase and stucco decorations and various ornamental stucco ceilings in the living rooms. Appraisal VILLA, erected in a typical late nineteenth-century eclectic building style after design by architect H. Beusekom, of general importance from an urban planning, cultural-historical and architectural-historical point of view as a well-preserved example of the characteristic villa construction, realised on the southern fortification works of the city of Groningen demolished at the end of the nineteenth century.
