Inleiding VILLA, vrijstaand gesitueerd in het Zuiderpark, gebouwd in 1881 in opdracht van J. Alken naar ontwerp van de Groninger architecten K. & H. Hoekzema in een eclectische bouwstijl. De tuin wordt omzoomd door een eenvoudig ijzeren hekwerk. Het gebouw is thans in gebruik als kantoor. De garage naast de zuidgevel komt niet voor rijksbescherming in aanmerking. Omschrijving Het op een vierkante plattegrond opgetrokken gebouw is symmetrisch van opzet en heeft een met hardsteen bekleed souterrain en twee bouwlagen onder een afgeknot schilddak, gedekt met leien. De gevels worden afgesloten door een kroonlijst met tandlijst, die een geprofileerde bakgoot dragen. De vijf traveeën brede voorgevel is geheel gestuct en voorzien van schijnvoegen. De hoeken bevatten stuc pilasters met imitatie-rustica blokken; op de verdieping pilasters met spiegels, die met rank- en loofwerk zijn versierd. In de iets risalerende ingangstravee bevindt zich een bewerkte, houten paneeldeur met stoep en bovenlicht in een rondboog, die wordt omlijst door stuc pilasters. Introduction VILLA, detached situated in the Zuiderpark, built in 1881 on behalf of J. Alken to the design of the Groningen architects K. & H. Hoekzema in an eclectic architectural style. The facades are terminated by a cornice with tooth moulding, which carries a moulded gutter. The five bays wide front facade is entirely plastered and provided with ashlar joints. The corners contain stucco pilasters with imitation-rustica blocks; on the upper storey pilasters with panels, which are decorated with acanthus and leaf work. In the slightly projecting entrance bay is a worked wooden panelled door with step and fanlight in a semicircular arch, which is surrounded by stucco pilasters. Above this is a balcony placed on two worked consoles with open balustrade and french doors under a semicircular arch and a plastered cabin with sides. All windows are straight-closed and have moulded stucco mouldings and keystones. In the northern side facade a blind is incorporated; the central risalit of the southern side facade contains on the upper storey two paired semicircular arched windows with stucco keystones. Appraisal VILLA, built in a late nineteenth-century eclectic architectural style to the design of the Groningen architects K. & H. Hoekzema, of general importance from an urban planning, cultural-historical and architectural-historical perspective as an intact example of the characteristic villa construction, realized on the southern fortifications of the city of Groningen, which were demolished at the end of the nineteenth century.
