The register's description

NLS BUILDING

Building originally intended as the headquarters of the NATIONAL AVIATION SCHOOL (NLS), erected in 1939 according to a Nieuwe Zakelijkheid design by H.F. Mertens on a more or less T-shaped floor plan with a low, tapering west wing under a rising, curved roof with overhang and the long, slightly concave east wing of two recessed and projecting storeys and basement under a very slightly bent canopy roof. The masonry walls are whitewashed and originally contain all steel frames and external doors. On the left in the east facade is a memorial stone which according to the inscription was placed by the then Minister of Defence.

The entrance is in the tripartite portico on the south side of the west wing, largely executed in steel and glass with vertical subdivision under a flat canopy roof; the projecting facades of the west wing each contain a four-part window section with tall subdivision, the short gable wall is blank in relation to its original function as a classroom. The long west facade further contains, to the left of the classroom wing, a staff entrance and two four-part window sections with tall subdivision and a circular window in the projecting portico of the former canteen space on the ground floor; on the upper floor seven four-pane windows.

The south wing, which originally housed the entrance hall and offices (for the chief of flight operations, instructors and administration) and the staircase to the sleeping quarters on the upper floor (for duty instructors and 20 trainee pilots), contains in the south facade four low basement windows, on the left four coupled fanlights (for the toilets) and a high-placed lavatory window.

The east facade facing the airfield is symmetrically laid out and has at ground level in the centre over the full storey height a largely glazed bay window section the width of twelve narrow window axes, including three double garden doors, roofed over by the concrete floor of the overlying balcony. This bay window section originally belonged to the centrally situated recreation room. On either side of the bay are two vertical windows with subdivision placed and two four-part window sections with tall subdivision. The upper floor has seven window axes, of which the five in the middle are executed as double doors onto the shared balcony with steel tube railings. Entirely at the NW side is the entrance executed in glass and steel to the former canteen space in a small portico under a canopy roof.

The north facade contains on the upper floor four high-placed horizontal two-lights for the washing facilities originally situated behind.

VALUATION:

Former main building of the National Aviation School in the Nieuwe Zakelijkheid style, of importance as part of the Ypenburg airfield complex and from the point of view of aviation history.

N.B. The later added connecting element on the south side, linking the NLS building with the station building falls outside the protection.
