Inleiding

Introduction

DWELLING HOUSE built in 1912 as 'Gentlemen's Dwelling with farmhouse' for Mr. J. Rigterink at Oosterhesselen, designed by J. Daanje from Emmen in traditional style with the use of, among others, Art Nouveau and baroque-referring elements. Most likely the house (office) was also used for the collection of rent payments. Meanwhile the dwelling house is dually occupied. Noteworthy is the garden layout which reinforces the stately appearance of the dwelling house.

Description

Dwelling house with rear barn. The dwelling house, based on a rectangular ground plan, is built in brick and is covered by a truncated gabled roof laid with Lucas IJsbrandspan; corner chimneys with caps and finials. According to the building drawing, a crête sat on the moulded eaves line of the truncated roof plane. Facade construction with broad plastered plinth, rising brickwork; blocked corner pilasters with bosses; frieze with bead moulding and Art Nouveau tile tableaus (on the southwest side disappeared) and above the frieze a moulded drip moulding. Windows with natural stone sills; relief probably executed in zinc with flower decoration in the arch spandrel; relieving arches in red brick with abutment and keystones. The symmetrically arranged front facade has in the centre a natural stone doorstep, a porch provided with plastered surround; Art Nouveau tile tableaus and a double panel door with nail and Art Nouveau decorative grilles provided with carved work. Above the porch a balcony resting on worked consoles (with mascarons). The raised central section has a double opening balcony door with a window on each side. The structure of the raised central section is comparable to the main mass, albeit with a different Art Nouveau tile tableau in the frieze. The north facade contains two basement windows with burglar bars. In north and south facades a coupled window. The adjoining barn has a T-shaped roof plan with half-hipped ends, partly laid with Lucas IJsbrandspan and provided with cast-iron gutters. Facade construction with plastered plinth and rising brickwork. In the front facade an arched double entrance door with glazing bars in the upper part; decorative hinges and rooster comb; stable window with relieving arch. Triple coupled attic window in Art Nouveau style with horseshoe-shaped relieving arch and brick mosaic in arch spandrel; gable with wooden round-arch decorative brace. Side facade with swivel-opening arched cast-iron windows. Rear (northwest facade) with bricked-up cart door; stable doors and arched cast-iron 6-pane stable windows.

Valuation

Dwelling house of cultural-historical significance as an expression of a particular socio-economic development (tenancy system); of architectural-historical significance because of its design, its appearance, the application of decorative materials and its integrity. In urban-planning terms, the property is significant because of its image-determining location in the structurally intact area.
