Omschrijving
Inleiding

Description
Introduction
Free-standing single-aisle church in neo-Romanesque style from 1885-1886 designed by architect K. Stoffels for the Anabaptist congregation. The church building forms part of the rich late 19th century building along the curved Paleisstraat, which was laid out after the municipality received the royal properties behind the palace on the Kneuterdijk from King William III.
NB. The modernisations carried out in 1964 by architect S. Schamhart are not subject to protection.
Description
Church building on rectangular plan consisting of one storey beneath a slate-covered gabled roof, three window bays wide and five window bays deep, and a building section adjoining the rear facade, also on rectangular plan consisting of two storeys beneath a hipped roof. The church facades are constructed in fair-faced brickwork with decorative use of red facing brick and ashlar ornamental components. In several places the richly worked gutters with catchment basins from the period of construction are still present. The richly detailed stepped gable at Paleisstraat is flanked by polygonal buttresses with masonry pinnacles and has a climbing arch frieze along the eaves line. In this gable crowned by a natural stone cross finial are two round-arched windows and in the centre a rose window, fitted with tracery in brick and natural stone. Windows with leaded glass. The projecting former entrance portico with pinnacles on columnettes and a climbing arch frieze has an archivolt resting on small columns with capitals. The present masonry infill of the original entrance section dates from the 1980s. In the side facades round-arched windows fitted with tracery in brick and natural stone and leaded glass. Wooden added frames have been placed in front of the windows. Between the windows the side facades are articulated by pilaster strips. A separation between the ground floor and windows situated higher is suggested by a profiled ashlar string course which is articulated as pilasters at the location of the pilaster strips. Furthermore in the side facades ornamental wall anchors and decorative brickwork, particularly under the eaves line; beneath the windows sandstone blind recesses with Gothic trefoil motif. The side facades terminate with half-round ends on the east side.
The rectangular building section against the east facade is designed in the same manner as the church building. The ground floor is entirely modernised in a different architecture except for the north facade.
The interior was modernised in 1964 after a design by architect S. Schamhart.
Appraisal
Church of architectural-historical importance as a valuable example of ecclesiastical building inspired by neo-Romanesque style. Also of value as part of a harmonious and characteristic ensemble from the end of the previous century at Paleisstraat.
