Omschrijving
Inleiding.

Description
Introduction.
Office building Mercurius from 1901-1902 on rectangular ground plan built on commission of the "Maatschappij tot Exploitatie van het gebouw Mercurius". The design in Art Nouveau is by Z. Hoek and J.Th. Wouters. The front façade is incorporated in the street façade with continuous built-up development. In 1984-1985 the former office building was restored by architect Th. J. Drenth with the storeys converted into 28 residential units. Description.
The office building Mercurius comprises four storeys; at the front covered by a cut-off gabled roof with the ridge parallel to the building line, behind it a flat roof. It is the first building specifically designed as an office and warehouse complex in The Hague. It has an iron skeletal structure, which allowed the high spaces with large glass surfaces on the ground floor to be realised. The iron structure is provided with a cement casing according to the Monier system. The front façade, executed in Art Nouveau, is built up in yellow facing brick and is enlivened by the application of natural stone decorative elements. The central section with gable that projects in a three-sided bay on the first and second storeys, emphasises the symmetrical arrangement of the façade. The bay is terminated by a mortared open balustrade with a balcony behind it. The central section is flanked by two loggias at the height of the second storey. A large variety of window types is applied in the façade. On the ground floor the glass surfaces are set in iron, the storeys have wooden frames. The original entrance section, which is set back, besides Art Nouveau elements also has motifs in the neo-baroque style. This entrance, formerly accessed from the external space, was closed off to the front in 1910 by the classicist-designed entrance section to the design of W. B. van Liefland. Evaluation.
The office building Mercurius is of cultural-historical and typological importance due to its innovative value as one of the first office buildings in the Netherlands with an iron skeletal structure. Architecturally it is of importance as a valuable example of Art Nouveau; main form, detailing and material use are intact.
