Inleiding Herenhuis uit ca. 1887, gebouwd in eclectisch- renaissancistische stijl in opdracht van C.G.G. Vertholen de Salve de Braneton, gepensioneerd majoor der huzaren.
Omschrijving Herenhuis op rechthoekige plattegrond, bestaande uit twee bouwlagen onder een afgeknot zinken roevendak, aan de voorzijde met leien bekleed, vier vensterassen breed. De gevel is van baksteen op hardstenen plint en voorzien van gepleisterde banden en geblokte strekken boven de vensters. De plint bezit geblokte rustica panelen onder de vensters. De gevel wordt geleed door hardstenen pilasters op de eerste bouwlaag en op de tweede bouwlaag door dubbele geblokte bakstenen pilasters met composiete kapitelen, op een hoge gepleisterde piedestal. De bouwlagen worden van elkaar gescheiden door een brede gepleisterde cordonlijst en waterlijst, voorzien van een tandlijstje. De ingang in de tweede as van links bestaat uit een paneeldeur met rijk gesneden panelen en siersmeedwerk, een gesneden deurkalf en een met pijlenbundels gedecoreerd bovenlicht. Tegen de tweede bouwlaag bevindt zich een balkon over de beide middenassen, rustend op drie rijk bewerkte consoles. Het balkon bezit een smeedijzeren sierhek. De schuifvensters op de tweede bouwlaag bezitten T-kozijnen en aan de onderzijde gestucte panelen met guirlandes. Het hoofdgestel bestaat uit een fries met eier- en tandlijst, en consoles, waartussen guirlandes, en een kroonlijst op klossen. Boven de middenassen bevindt zich een gemetselde dakkapel, voorzien van ionische pilasters en twee schuifvensters. De dakkapel bezit aan weerszijden voluutvormige wangen en wordt bekroond door een gebroken driehoekig fronton waartussen een piedestal met bolbekroning.
Waardering Herenhuis van architectuurhistorisch belang als representatief voorbeeld van een woonhuis in een eclectisch- renaissancistische bouwstijl. Description
Town house on rectangular plan, consisting of two storeys under an abated zinc rafter roof, on the front cladded with slate, four window bays wide. The facade is of brick on hardstone plinth and provided with plastered bands and blocked courses above the windows. The plinth has blocked rustication panels below the windows. The facade is articulated by hardstone pilasters on the first storey and on the second storey by double blocked brick pilasters with Composite capitals, on a high plastered pedestal. The storeys are separated from each other by a broad plastered cordon moulding and drip moulding, provided with a small dentil course. The entrance in the second bay from the left consists of a panelled door with richly carved panels and ornamental ironwork, a carved door head and a fanlight decorated with arrow bundles. Against the second storey is a balcony over the two centre bays, resting on three richly worked consoles. The balcony has a wrought-iron ornamental railing. The sash windows on the second storey have T-frames and at the bottom plastered panels with garlands.
The cornice consists of a frieze with egg-and-dart course and consoles, between which garlands, and a cornice on brackets. Above the centre bays is a brick dormer window, provided with Ionic pilasters and two sash windows. The dormer window has scroll-shaped cheeks on either side and is crowned by a broken triangular pediment with between them a pedestal with ball finial.
Valuation
Town house of architectural-historical importance as a representative example of a residence in an eclectic-Renaissance architectural style. Main form, material and detailing are well preserved. As part of a group of town houses from the same period, the building also has ensemble value. The visually defining location at the green space of Surinamestraat adds further value.
