Omschrijving
Inleiding

Description
Introduction
Corner property between the broad and narrow parts of Surinamestraat, built in 1880-1881 by royal architect C.H. Peters as a residence for himself, in neo-renaissance style.
Description
Mansion on rectangular plan, consisting of three storeys under a gabled roof covered with tiles. The arrangement of window bays is irregular. The brick facades are provided with sandstone bands, authentic seventeenth-century wall anchors and facade stones, including one depicting the birth of Venus and one with a mask head, both on the long facade side on the second storey. The storeys are separated from each other by a sandstone drip moulding. On the short side the facade is terminated by a stepped gable. To the right of this is a tall brick chimney stack. On the projecting corner is an oriel turret, resting on an iron beam and sandstone consoles. The oriel turret has a shell motif on the underside and is crowned by a slate spire. The leftmost bay of the long side is treated as a risalit. The entrance is situated in this section, consisting of a double wooden panelled door with a three-part sandstone fanlight. The entrance is crowned by a relieving arch with mask keystone, and carved foliage and architectural attributes in the arch drum. To the left of the entrance is a narrow window with ornamental ironwork. The remaining windows mostly have casement windows with continuous central stile and window grilles, on the first storey with shutters on either side. The blocked relieving arches are provided with shell motifs in the arch drums; only the window on the third storey of the short side has an angel head in the arch drum. Between the windows on this storey on the long side are two narrow blind recesses. The guttering rests on sandstone consoles.
Interior: on the first storey a corner room with an oval ceiling painting depicting Aurora by M. Terwesten (1670-1757), originating from a house in Middelburg. The painting is set in a moulded wooden frame. Further in this room is a carved wooden fireplace mantel in neo-renaissance style with 17th-century tiles, a fireback (from 1701) and a fire plate with chequerboard pattern. In the back room a similar fireplace mantel with authentic hearth from the construction period of the house and a simply stuccoed wooden ceiling. In the hall a stuccoed ceiling with small coffered vault. Along the walls polychrome tile compositions from the 17th century, enclosed by a frieze of blue tiles. According to tradition, these tiles originate from the house of Constantijn Huygens on the Plein, which had to make way for the Ministry of Justice designed by Peters. The doors on the first storey are decorated with panels and ornamented wooden knobs. Wooden spiral staircase with iron railing. On the second storey is a corner room with a beam ceiling on keystones, decorated with sculpted and polychrome heads in seventeenth-century manner. Wooden fireplace mantel. In the small oriel turret neo-renaissance panelling. In the adjacent room is a ceiling with moulded beams and a wooden yoke on wall posts, decorated in neo-renaissance style. Doors with rectangular panels. On the third storey there is a panelled door and a simple wooden door, both in seventeenth-century manner.
Evaluation
Mansion of architectural-historical and cultural-historical importance as a representative example of a residence in a rich neo-renaissance style and because of the exceptional interior components. The property is of historical significance as the residence designed by Peters himself as royal architect. As part of a series of well-preserved residences from the second half of the nineteenth century, the property also has ensemble value. An added value is provided by the visually defining location on the corner between the broad and narrow parts of Surinamestraat.
