Herenhuis uit 1885, gebouwd door architect C.J. van Roode in neorenaissance stijl.
Het pand vormt het rechterdeel van een symmetrische groep van drie herenhuizen aan de Surinamestraat 2, 4 en 6.
Omschrijving
Herenhuis op rechthoekige plattegrond, bestaande uit een souterrain en twee bouwlagen onder een met leien gedekt afgeknot schilddak, drie vensterassen breed. De gevel is van baksteen en voorzien van gepleisterde sierbanden, geblokte ontlastingsbogen en strekken boven de vensters, een cartouche en sierankers. Tegen het souterrain is een geblokte bepleistering met rustica aangebracht op een hardstenen plint. De bouwlagen worden van elkaar gescheiden door brede gepleisterde cordon- en waterlijsten, die tussen de eerste en tweede bouwlaag zijn voorzien van een tandlijst. De twee linkerassen zijn als een risaliet behandeld en worden door een trapgevel, waarop een piedestal met schelpmotief aan weerszijden, bekroond. Onder de piedestal bevindt zich een korte pilaster, rustend op een ionisch kapiteel.
De ingang in de rechteras bestaat uit een paneeldeur met zware profielen, een rijk gesneden deurkalf en een rondboog bovenlicht met sluitsteen en versierde boogzwikken, en is gevat in een omlijsting van gepleistede pilasters met neorenaissance versiering op een hardstenen sokkel en een hoofdgestel met consoles in het fries. Het hoofdgestel draagt een driehoekig fronton met sierbollen. Voor de ingang is een hardstenen trapje.
De souterrainvensters met T-kozijnen bezitten een hardstenen omlijsting en zijn voorzien van smeedijzeren tralies. De schuifvensters op de eerste bouwlaag bezitten een rondboog bovenlicht. Aan de onderzijde bevinden zich gepleisterde diamantkoppen en rusticablokken, evenals onder het T-venster op de tweede bouwlaag.
De twee vensters in het risalietdeel op deze bouwlaag bezitten openslaande ramen die uitkomen op een balkon met balusterbalustrade en siersmeedwerk, op de hoeken voorzien van sierbollen. Het balkon rust op drie rijk bewerkte steunen, bestaande uit korte zuilen en consoles met neorenaissance motief. Het venster in de topgevel is een tweelichtvenster, gescheiden door een pilaster.
Het hoofdgestel in de rechteras rust op geblokte pilasters en bestaat uit een fries met cirkelvormig motief en triglyfconsoles, en een kroonlijst. Het dak bevat een kleine dakkapel bekroond door een zinken dak met piron.

Grotendeels bewaard gebleven rijk eclectisch interieur; hal met marmeren trap, stucwerkpanelen in neo-Lodewijk XVI-stijl en een plafond met stucwerkversiering in neo-Lodewijk XIV- stijl. Tochtpui met gegraveerd glas. Gangplafond met stucversiering, trap met balusterleuning in neorenaissance stijl, paneeldeuren met opzetstukken. De voor- en achterkamer van de eerste bouwlaag bezitten rijke koofplafonds met stucwerk. Schoorsteenmantels uit de bouwtijd. Zijkamer met rijk stucplafond in eclectische stijl. De kamers op de tweede bouwlaag bezitten stucplafonds met cassettenversiering.
Waardering
Herenhuis van architectuurhistorisch belang als representatief voorbeeld van een woonhuis in een rijke neorenaissance bouwstijl. Hoofdvorm, materiaal en detaillering zijn in- en uitwendig gaaf bewaard. Als onderdeel van een groep symmetrisch ontworpen herenhuizen, heeft het pand tevens ensemblewaarde. Description
Town house on rectangular plan, consisting of a basement and two storeys under a hipped roof covered with slate, three window bays wide. The facade is of brick and provided with plastered decorative bands, blocked relieving arches and running courses above the windows, a cartouche and ornamental wall anchors. Against the basement is blocked plastering with rustication applied to a hardstone plinth. The storeys are separated from each other by broad plastered cordon and drip mouldings, which between the first and second storey are provided with a dentil course. The two left bays are treated as a risalit and are crowned by a stepped gable, with a pedestal with shell motif on either side. Below the pedestal is a short pilaster, resting on an Ionic capital.
The entrance in the right bay consists of a panelled door with heavy mouldings, a richly carved door head and a round-arched fanlight with keystone and decorated spandrels, and is set in a frame of plastered pilasters with Neo-Renaissance decoration on a hardstone socle and a cornice with consoles in the frieze. The cornice carries a triangular pediment with ornamental balls. In front of the entrance is a hardstone step.
The basement windows with T-frames have a hardstone moulding and are provided with wrought-iron grilles. The sash windows on the first storey have a round-arched fanlight. At the bottom are plastered diamond bosses and rustication blocks, as well as below the T-window on the second storey.
The two windows in the risalit section on this storey have casement windows opening onto a balcony with baluster railing and ornamental ironwork, on the corners provided with ornamental balls. The balcony rests on three richly worked supports, consisting of short columns and consoles with Neo-Renaissance motif. The window in the top gable is a two-light window, separated by a pilaster.
The cornice in the right bay rests on blocked pilasters and consists of a frieze with circular motif and triglyph consoles, and a cornice. The roof contains a small dormer window topped by a zinc roof with hip tiles.
Against the rear facade are two oriels, one above the other, spanning the full width.
