Inleiding
Herenhuis uit 1885, gebouwd door architect C.J. van Roode in neo-renaissance stijl. Het pand vormt het middendeel van een symmetrische groep van drie herenhuizen aan de Surinamestraat 2, 4 en 6.
Tegen de achtergevel is een - niet beschermenswaardige - moderne aanbouw over beide bouwlagen aangebracht.
Omschrijving
Herenhuis op rechthoekige plattegrond, bestaande uit een souterrain en twee bouwlagen onder een met leien gedekt afgeknot schilddak, drie vensterassen breed. De middenas is als een risaliet behandeld en wordt bekroond door een gemetselde dakkapel met een steil schilddak. De dakkapel bezit een hoofdgestel bestaande uit een fries met cirkelvormig motief en triglyfconsoles, waarboven een gebroken driehoekig fronton. Hiertussen is een piedestal met cirkelmotief geplaatst. De gevel is van baksteen en voorzien van gepleisterde sierbanden en geblokte, licht getoogde strekken boven de vensters. Tegen het souterrain is een geblokte bepleistering met rustica aangebracht op een hardstenen plint. De bouwlagen worden van elkaar gescheiden door brede gepleisterde cordon- en waterlijsten, die tussen de eerste en tweede bouwlaag voorzien zijn van een tandlijstje.
De ingang in de rechteras bestaat uit een paneeldeur met zware profielen en twee ronde vensters, een deurkalf op gebogen hoekconsoles en een tweelicht bovenlicht, gescheiden door een pilaster met neo-renaissance motief. Boven de deur is een cartouche aangebracht met het bouwjaar anno 1885.
De tweelicht-souterrainvensters bezitten een hardstenen omlijsting. De schuifvensters zijn voorzien van T-kozijnen op de tweede bouwlaag en aan de onderzijde van gepleisterde diamantkoppen en rusticablokken. Tegen de tweede bouwlaag bevindt zich in het risalietdeel een houten erker op rijk bewerkte consoles met neo-renaissance motief. De erker is voorzien van pilasters met verdiepte velden die een hoofdgestel met triglyfconsoles en rechthoekige panelen in het fries dragen. Langs de onderrand zijn diamantkoppen aangebracht. De erker wordt bekroond door een balkon met balusterbalustrade en siersmeedwerk.
De kroonlijst rust op klossen, het fries is gedecoreerd met een kleurig cirkelvormig motief. Het dak bevat aan weerszijden van de gemetselde dakkapel nog twee kleine dakkapellen, die bekroond worden door leien daken.
Grotendeels bewaard gebleven rijk eclectisch interieur met marmeren trappen, tochtpui met gegraveerd glas en kamers met stucplafonds.
Waardering
Herenhuis van architectuurhistorisch belang als representatief voorbeeld van een woonhuis in een rijke neo-renaissance bouwstijl. Hoofdvorm, materiaal en detaillering zijn in- en uitwendig gaaf bewaard. Als onderdeel van een groep symmetrisch ontworpen herenhuizen, heeft het pand tevens ensemblewaarde. Description
Townhouse on a rectangular floor plan, consisting of a basement and two storeys under a hipped roof covered with slate, three window bays wide. The central bay is treated as a risalit and is crowned by a brick roof dormer with a steep hipped roof. The roof dormer has a heading consisting of a frieze with circular motif and triglyph consoles, above which a broken triangular pediment. Between these a pedestal with circular motif has been placed. The facade is of brick and provided with plastered ornamental bands and rusticated, slightly arched stretches above the windows. Against the basement a rusticated plaster finish with rustication has been applied on a hardstone plinth. The storeys are separated from each other by broad plastered cordon and drip mouldings, which between the first and second storey are provided with a small dentil moulding.
The entrance in the right bay consists of a panelled door with heavy mouldings and two round windows, a door frame on curved corner consoles and a two-light fanlight, separated by a pilaster with neo-renaissance motif. Above the door is a cartouche applied with the building year anno 1885.
The two-light basement windows have a hardstone surround. The sash windows are provided with T-frames on the second storey and at the bottom with plastered diamond bosses and rustication blocks. Against the second storey is located in the risalit section a timber oriel on richly worked consoles with neo-renaissance motif. The oriel is provided with pilasters with recessed fields that carry a heading with triglyph consoles and rectangular panels in the frieze. Diamond bosses are applied along the lower edge. The oriel is crowned by a balcony with balustrade and ornamental ironwork.
The cornice rests on blocks, the frieze is decorated with a colourful circular motif. The roof contains on either side of the brick roof dormer two more small roof dormers, which are crowned by slate roofs.
Largely preserved rich eclectic interior with marble staircases, draught lobby with engraved glass and rooms with stucco ceilings.
Valuation
Townhouse of architectural-historical importance as a representative example of a residence in a rich neo-renaissance architectural style. Main form, material and detailing are well preserved internally and externally. As part of a group of symmetrically designed townhouses, the property also has ensemble value. An added value is its prominent position on the planted area of Surinamestraat.
