Inleiding
Aan drie zijden vrijstaand herenhuis uit 1885, gebouwd door architect C.J. van Roode in neo-renaissance stijl. Het pand vormt het linkerdeel van een symmetrische groep van drie herenhuizen aan de Surinamestraat 2, 4 en 6.
Omschrijving
Herenhuis op rechthoekige plattegrond, bestaande uit een souterrain en twee bouwlagen onder een met shingles gedekt afgeknot schilddak, drie vensterassen breed. De gevel is van baksteen en voorzien van gepleisterde sierbanden, geblokte ontlastingsbogen en strekken boven de vensters, een cartouche en sierankers. Tegen het souterrain is een geblokte bepleistering met rustica aangebracht op een hardstenen plint. De bouwlagen worden van elkaar gescheiden door brede gepleisterde cordon- en waterlijsten, die tussen de eerste en tweede bouwlaag zijn voorzien van een tandlijst. De twee rechterassen zijn als een risaliet behandeld en worden door een trapgevel bekroond, waarop een piedestal met schelpmotief aan weerszijden. Onder de piedestal bevindt zich een korte pilaster, rustend op een ionisch kapiteel.
De ingang in de linkeras bestaat uit een paneeldeur met zware profielen, een rijk gesneden deurkalf en een rondboog bovenlicht met sluitsteen en versierde boogzwikken, en is gevat in een omlijsting van gepleisterde pilasters met neo- renaissance versiering op een hardstenen sokkel en een hoofdgestel met consoles in het fries. Het hoofdgestel draagt een driehoekig fronton met sierbollen. Voor de ingang is een hardstenen trapje.
De tweelicht-souterrainvensters bezitten een hardstenen omlijsting en zijn voorzien van smeedijzeren tralies. De schuifvensters op de eerste bouwlaag bezitten T-kozijnen en een rondboog bovenlicht. Townhouse on a rectangular floor plan, consisting of a basement and two storeys under a hipped roof covered with shingles, three window bays wide. The facade is of brick and provided with plastered ornamental bands, rusticated relieving arches and stretches above the windows, a cartouche and ornamental wall anchors. Against the basement a rusticated plaster finish with rustication has been applied on a hardstone plinth. The storeys are separated from each other by broad plastered cordon and drip mouldings, which between the first and second storey are provided with a dentil moulding. The two right bays are treated as a risalit and are crowned by a stepped gable, on which a pedestal with shell motif on either side. Below the pedestal is a short pilaster, resting on an Ionic capital.
The entrance in the left bay consists of a panelled door with heavy mouldings, a richly carved door frame and a round-arch fanlight with keystone and decorated spandrels, and is set in a surround of plastered pilasters with neo-renaissance decoration on a hardstone base and a heading with consoles in the frieze. The heading carries a triangular pediment with ornamental finials. In front of the entrance is a hardstone staircase.
