Inleiding
SYNAGOGE, gebouwd in 1839 in opdracht van de Maatschappij van Weldadigheid. Rond 1900 verbouwd in opdracht van het Ministerie van Justitie volgens ontwerp van W.C. Metzelaar en van de naam 'Hoofdkantoor Directie' voorzien. Van belang zijn tevens de erfaanleg met klinkerbestrating en de beplanting met leilinden. Rond 1960 is het gebouw uitgebreid met een houten aanbouw. Het interieur is niet meer oorspronkelijk.
Omschrijving
Evenwijdig aan de weg gelegen sober vormgegeven bakstenen gebouw op rechthoekige grondslag met aan de achterzijde kleine, eveneens bakstenen haakse aanbouw; zadeldak met wolfseinden belegd met pannen; eenvoudige goot op klossen en windveren. Het rechtergedeelte onderscheidt zich door 6-ruits schuiframen die minder hoog zijn dan de 6-ruitsschuifvensters met ontlastingsboog (metselmozaïek). In dit gedeelte zit een paneeldeur met bovenlicht. In de kopse gevel zit een rondlicht.
Waardering
De synagoge is typerend voor het verzorgingsniveau van de Rijkswerkinrichting (in casu de kerkelijke verscheidenheid) en als zodanig een essentieel en wat betreft oorspronkelijke functionele samenhang een uniek onderdeel van het uitzonderlijk waardevolle gebied Veenhuizen. Voorts is het gebouw van architectonisch, typologisch en stedenbouwkundig belang.

Introduction
SYNAGOGUE, built in 1839 on commission of the Maatschappij van Weldadigheid. Around 1900 remodelled on commission of the Ministry of Justice according to design by W.C. Metzelaar and provided with the name 'Hoofdkantoor Directie'. Also of importance are the grounds layout with brick paving and planting with lime trees. Around 1960 the building was extended with a wooden annexe. The interior is no longer original.
Description
Parallel to the road situated soberly designed brick building on rectangular floor plan with at the rear a small, likewise brick right-angled annexe; gabled roof with half-hipped ends covered with tiles; simple gutter on corbels and wind braces. The right section is distinguished by 6-pane sash windows which are lower than the 6-pane sash windows with relieving arch (brick mosaic). In this section is a panel door with fanlight. In the gable wall is a circular window.
Valuation
The synagogue is typical of the standard of care of the State Penal Institution (in this case ecclesiastical diversity) and as such an essential and, with respect to original functional coherence, a unique component of the exceptionally valuable area Veenhuizen. Furthermore the building is of architectural, typological and urban planning importance.
