Inleiding

Introduction

The DWELLING HOUSE built to the left of the R.C. Church Maria ten Hemelopening was erected in 1900-1901 in eclectic style. The house was built for notary Diederik Anne Marie de Fremery and designed by architect J. Smallenbroek. In 1934 the house was connected to the church by means of a connecting element and at that time also acquired the function of rectory. Since 1992 it has been in use as an office building.

Description.

The house has one storey beneath a composite, truncated hipped roof covered with glazed flat Frisian tiles. It is constructed in red facing brick and brickwork and is furnished with tapering plastered plinths, a facing stone lintel, a string course with a facing stone infill, an entablature with profiled cornice on brackets and rectangular facade openings with profiled frames, projecting sills and mostly glass-in-lead filled fanlights beneath plastered roof tiles with keystones. The asymmetrical front facade has on the right a pavilion section with slightly recessed truncated corners and a corbelled entablature. Above the central bay of this projection is a built-up roof dormer with a deep-set rectangular window between pilasters, cornice and curved pediment. To the left of the risalit is an entrance portal with a terrace, a panel-hinged door with window irons, curved pediments and shell motifs beneath an ornamental calf and rectangular fanlight. A porte brisée emerges onto the terrace (with iron railing). The roof is furnished with a triangular roof window. In the left side of the portal stands a narrow window. In the left side facade there is only a window on the ground floor. The small portal at this facade is not original, but is furnished with a nineteenth-century door, which is comparable to the front door. To the right on the rear facade stands a slightly lower extension with one storey beneath a flat roof. The left part risalits and is furnished with a terrace and a wooden veranda with worked uprights. It is terminated by a parapet, upon which a porte brisée emerges. The rectangular roof dormer on this side is probably not original. The right side facade is furnished with a non-original, rectangular window on the ground floor and an original window on the first floor. The house is connected at this side to the church by means of a connecting element dating from the church's building period.

Valuation

The characterful house is of architectural-historical value as a still fairly well-preserved and typical representative of late nineteenth-century residential architecture for the well-to-do citizen. The image-determining building forms part of the church complex and the valuable nineteenth-century and early twentieth-century buildings belonging to the protected townscape in the "palaces district", whereby the ensemble value is also great.
