Inleiding

Introduction

The DWELLING HOUSE dating from approximately 1830, a detached building, has the characteristics of a sober variant of neo-classical residential architecture and belongs to the oldest buildings on the Nassaulaan. The set-back house, which is accompanied by a nineteenth-century adjoining COACH HOUSE, forms part of the valuable nineteenth and early twentieth-century buildings in the district known as the "palaces district" and forms part of the protected townscape. The house is situated on the edge of the early nineteenth-century city. Protection applies both to the dwelling house (with the exception of the later extension) and to the coach house and the cast and wrought iron railing at the front.

Description.

The building constructed from a rectangular floor plan has single-storey sections beneath truncated hipped roofs covered with Dutch tiles on either side of a higher central section with a hipped/saddle roof covered with the same tiles. The five-bay, symmetrical front facade is furnished with slightly arched window openings beneath lintels, plastered plinth, corner pilasters and an interrupted entablature with profiled cornice. The central section has a second storey with plastered side facades and a pediment with profiled moulding, shoulders and a round oeil de boeuf in the plastered tympanum. The entrance is furnished with a broad panel door with pseudo-staircase baluster and a broad calf with egg moulding beneath rectangular fanlight. The broad, plastered surround has a block division and pilasters resting on bases which carry an entablature with profiled cornice. The right side facade has been modified and is furnished with a large, non-original window. The house has at the rear a broad wooden balcony, upon which two portes brisées emerge beneath lintels. The large window section on the left is not original, nor is the roof dormer in the roof above it. Beneath the balcony stands a large facade opening with French windows. To the left of the building stands a large adjoining coach house beneath a hipped roof. On the Beilerstraat side, the coach house is furnished with rectangular carriage doors with a cross window in the fanlight, a round-arched window with glazing bars and wall anchors. The windows on the Nassaulaan side are slightly arched. The front garden of the house has at the road a property boundary in the form of cast and wrought iron railings. Against the left of the house, between front garden and coach house, stands a high curved railing of cast and wrought iron. Against the right of the house stands a railing between the front and rear garden.

Valuation

The characterful house, still in reasonably well-preserved condition, is a good example of early nineteenth-century residential architecture. The image-determining building, the adjoining coach house and the iron property boundary form an important ensemble among the predominantly nineteenth and early twentieth-century residential architecture for the well-to-do bourgeoisie in the "palaces district" and therefore has great ensemble value. The whole is situated in the protected townscape.
