The register's description

Inleiding

Introduction

Built in 1892 and extended around 1900 POST OFFICE, designed by state architect C.H. Peters. The building runs parallel to the road and is built in a neo-Renaissance style that shows affinity with neo-Gothic, hence also the designation Post Office Gothic. The post-war extension as well as the altered interior fall outside the protection.

Description.

The building is based on a rectangular ground plan. The whole is built of brick, contains two storeys and is covered by a gabled roof with cross gables, covered with glazed corrugated tile. Front side with mortared roof dormer with simple spout gavel in which a loft hatch. The facade composition consists of a plastered plinth, rising masonry, speckled courses and a string course. The articulation is determined by round-arch spandrels over two storeys with T-windows within; tile mosaic in the arch field; alternating blocks and keystones at the floor windows; wrought-iron ornamental wall anchors. For emphasis, glazed, single or multiple, set-back courses have been applied. The transition to the simple, (not original) gutter is formed by an arch frieze. Off-centre is a slightly projecting section placed with a stepped gable containing climbing arch niches, trefoil arch, natural stone elements and capping plates. The end facades are built in similar style. On the southern side facade two building volumes under a catslide roof have been built in similar style.

Valuation

The former post office is of cultural-historical importance as an expression of a specific socio-economic development; furthermore, as a design by the nationally known state architect C.H. Peters, it is of architectural-historical importance because of the typical design and function; moreover, it contributes significantly to the legibility of the surroundings; the building is furthermore prominently located within the protected streetscape.
