Omschrijving
Duynstee in 1928-'29.

Description
SHOPPING ARCADE, consisting of two covered shopping galleries with glazed roofs that meet at an obtuse angle at a rotunda covered by a thirteen-part glazed dome; a gatehouse with main entrance and two side wings on the corner of Buitenhof and Kettingstraat; a much simpler gatehouse on Spuistraat, and two structures built over the Achterom - all built in 1882-'85 to a strongly simplified design by J.C. van Wijk and H. Wesstra, in international-eclectic style; and a third arm later executed towards the Hofweg, in expressionist style to a design by Jos. Duynstee in 1928-'29.
The main gatehouse has five storeys, of which the bottom two - ground floor and mezzanine - are provided with a natural stone cladding with Doric columns on bases, rustication work and Doric frieze, and of which the two middle storeys are built alternately in natural and brickstone while the fifth encompasses the storey in the roof; the actual gatehouse is covered by a high-rising surrounding slate hipped roof, the two side wings by slate gabled roofs against stepped gables, of which that on the Kettingstraat only contains steps on the street side. The actual gate section, spanning three window bays, is supported by two Doric columns on octagonal bases; the two rustication sections on either side are provided with blind niches with segmental pediment; the first and second storeys contain straight-sided French windows with plastered moulded surrounds, and paired Ionic columns of the colossal order, each carrying an entablature whereby the building years are marked on the friezes and which are connected to each other by a cornice, supported by consoles between which star-shaped mosaic tiles are inserted; the first storey furthermore contains a low natural stone balustrade on which two cast-iron figures are placed - representing agriculture and industry - and further Composite pilasters which are cut off at the sides; the top gable crowned by a broken segmental pediment with inswept plastered side pieces likewise possesses ornamental railings and further two herms - representing Neptune and Mercury - and a top piece crowned by a pediment with the city coat of arms, framed by two Composite pilasters and supported by a frieze on which in gilt letters the inscription Passage.
The left side wing on the Buitenhof spanning seven window bays is executed in virtually the same style as the actual gate section; the two corner sections are each accentuated by a large round-arched window on the ground floor, serving as entrance to the restaurant, and by a balcony supported by consoles between Ionic colossal pilasters on the first and second storey, and by a large roof dormer on the storey in the roof, which like the smaller intermediate roof dormers is framed by Composite pilasters with entablature and pediment.
The right side wing on the Kettingstraat is essentially similar to the left side wing, but here the fanlights of the mezzanine still possess the original ironwork. Also located here at the height of the middle window bay is a porch with steps and double entrance with doors fitted with oval panes.
On the gallery side the gatehouse is provided with a triumphal arch carried by Ionic columns encompassing three round-arched windows between pilasters.
The covered shopping gallery from the gatehouse to the rotunda contains twenty-two window bays - whereby some shops are wider than one bay - and four storeys, namely a basement ground floor, a mezzanine - both intended as shop space - and two storeys (originally intended as residential storeys).
The ground floor is provided with a marble base, in which at various shops (nos. 5, 7, 17, 27; 8, 10, 14, 22, 26, 28, 36) the basement window with ornamental ironwork is still present, and which varies in height in order to mask the existing height difference of 1.65 m. For this purpose continuous mouldings are further installed between the mezzanine and the first storey, provided with volutes, triglyphs and dent moulding, as well as along the foot of the roof. Per bay colossal pilasters are further present which support these mouldings and each of which is provided with a rosette; at most bays arched windows on the mezzanine with ornamental ironwork are also still present; the round-arched window on the first storey contains ornamental ironwork between two bases, while the entablature is reduced to a projecting window sill; the straight-sided window on the second storey likewise contains ornamental ironwork. At no. 19 a roundel with volutes is still present above the former entrance to the grotto-cafe, while at the opposite no. 20 a similar roundel with window above the former entrance to the stairwell is visible. At no. 131 a frieze with egg-and-dart moulding is still present above the former hotel entrance.
The covered shopping gallery between Spuistraat and rotunda contains eighteen window bays and is executed in virtually the same style as the shopping gallery described above; basement windows with ornamental ironwork are present here at nos. 41, 45, 46, 47, 49 and 51.
The structure built over the Achterom - between nos. 50 and 52, and between nos. 51 and 53 - is supported on the east side by four Doric pilasters on each side, which in the most eastern bay contains an entrance, which like the windows in the other bays is closed with a round arch; on the west side the structure is only one bay deep, likewise supported by Doric pilasters. The facades on the Achterom are built in brickwork, now whitewashed, and provided with lisenes; the windows on the first storey possess arch fields, while the windows on the second storey are crowned by a pediment.
The gatehouse on Spuistraat contains on the gallery side a triumphal arch, carried by capitals-less columns and a balcony supported by volutes with a mascaron; the round-arched windows on the first storey and the straight-sided windows on the second still possess ornamental ironwork. The facade on Spuistraat is built in alternating natural and brickstone and contains on the left three straight-sided windows with balustrade and framed by Doric pilasters on the first storey and mezzanine windows with ornamental ironwork on the second storey; on the right a risalit with balustrade and projecting balcony and Composite pilasters; the whole is concluded by a substantial cornice with dent moulding, and covered by a mansard roof with zinc lozenges. The passage itself is plastered and provided with ornamental moulded borders.
The rotunda is executed in a comparable style to both described arms, the ground floor and mezzanine are hereby provided with plastered rustication work with bossed lisenes on which the colossal columns rest that carry the dome, and with volutes to the side, to support the lower columns that carry the arches of the three passages. The thirteen-part dome of fourteen metres diameter is constructed in two layers, of which the lower - externally projecting, conical - ring per bay is subdivided into four by three panes and the upper, spherical ring each contains four panes per bay; the original dome, already modified in 1929 in connection with the construction of the third arm, was again adapted in 1980 (in differing form).
The section built in 1928-'29 between Hofweg and rotunda contains a block-shaped gatehouse spanning eight window bays with a narrow, flat-roofed staircase tower projecting above it to the left. The whole possesses a black marble base, a mezzanine with green-coloured natural stone cladding and a four-storey superstructure with yellow-coloured natural stone cladding. To the left of the passage an entrance to the Passage theatre, to the right a shop window which is accentuated at the corner by an advertising column, with base and top in Amsterdam School style.
No. 7 contains a porch with wooden door from the construction period and with inscription concerning architect and contractor on the right base; the gate entrance itself is marked by two sculpted figures - possibly representing traffic and technology - in the passage, which contains two shop windows on each side, on the east side an inscription with names and building year of the founders of this third arm.
The superstructure on the Hofweg is provided with steel windows with vertical subdivision, separated by projecting, worked wall piers with crowning related to Amsterdam School style; the staircase tower contains an elongated window strip, from which the original stained-glass windows with geometric pattern have meanwhile been removed, framed by similarly executed wall piers; the top is accentuated by a cubic, design related to the work of W.M. Dudok.
The covered shopping gallery contains basement shops with black-marble bases with decorations in Amsterdam School style, and a plastered superstructure consisting of three sections spanning window bays on each side; the narrow rectangular windows are each separated by projecting wall piers.
No. 61 contains a porch with three wooden doors from the construction period; no. 63 still possesses stained-glass windows with geometric motif while no. 65 contains the entrance to the Passage theatre, provided with brass panelling, wooden doors with ornamental ironwork from the construction period and stained-glass windows with geometric motif which are likewise installed in the bay windows above - grouped per four, three and two - and of which the lower are waffle-shaped. The side facade of no. 42 like no. 72-74 still contains stained-glass fanlights with geometric pattern.
The floors of the three arms are provided with granite with black and red bands and with a meandering or lily-shaped motif at the corners; the floor of the rotunda contains a compass motif with lily shapes and diamonds. The glazed roofs describe a circular segment on which a lantern is installed lengthwise in the middle and which have a diagonal intersection at the corners; the support structure consists of perpendicular flat iron and rods with which the transverse profile irons in which the glass panes are installed are connected.
Shopping arcade with gatehouses, shops, public and private spaces and glass roofs and dome in characteristically international-eclectic style - for which the abundant use of classical decorative motifs such as columns, friezes, arches, pediments, as well as natural stone is typical - and with extension in expressionist style - for which emphasis on cubic and round building volumes is characteristic, as well as great attention to detailing - of general importance as the only example of a typical 19th century building type of international allure surviving in the Netherlands, and because of the remarkable architecture, as well as from the perspective of the development of The Hague as a major city, national centre.
