Inleiding.
Winkelhuis, gebouwd in 1913-1915 naar ontwerp van H.P. Berlage voor het modehuis Messens in enigszins traditionalistische, op het classicisme geinspireerde trant. Het pand heeft een ongeveer driehoekige plattegrond en is opgenomen in de straatwand met aaneengesloten bebouwing, met poortdoorgang naar het Achterom; het rechterdeel was in oorsprong bestemd voor de magazijnen van RS Stokvis & Zn, doch is thans bij een ander bedrijf in gebruik. Het winkelhuis omvat drie bouwlagen en een kapverdieping in het met pannen gedekte mansardedak. De breedte bedraagt 32 vensterassen. De gevel is geheel bekleed met natuursteen: het onderste gedeelte vertoont donker graniet en daarboven is lichter getinte zandsteen toegepast. Het verticale karakter van de gevel wordt geaccentueerd door de smalle vensterstroken, gescheiden door pilasterachtige muurdammen. De gevel telt drie risalietvormige partijen, waarboven de daklijst frontonvormig is doorgevoerd: een bredere waarin een driedelige doorrit en twee smallere die aanvankelijk beide toegangen tot de winkelruimte bevatten, maar waarvan de linker thans is veranderd in een etalageruit. Aan weerszijden van de doorrit en in de frontonachtige risalietbekroningen, evenals bovenin de afgeschuinde eindtravee rechts, is sculptuur toegepast van de hand van de beeldhouwer Lambert Zijl. In het mansardedak zijn houten dakkapellen met driehoekige bekroningen aangebracht. De grote warenhuisruimte op de begane grond kon in Berlages opzet naar behoefte worden ingedeeld door middel van verplaatsbare wanden. Waardering.
