Inleiding.
Voormalig hotel in de stijl van de Wiener Sezession gebouwd in 1904-1906 naar ontwerp van Joh. Mutters Jr. als uitbreiding van het hotel "De Twee Steden" aan de latere Hofweg. Sinds 1935 in gebruik als bioscoop (Cineac). Het pand is opgenomen in de aaneengesloten bebouwing van de pleinwand. NB. Het interieur dat feestzalen bevatte is behoudens het trappenhuis te rechterzijde geheel gemoderniseerd. De bescherming strekt zich dan ook slechts uit tot de voorgevel en het trappenhuis. Omschrijving.
Pand op rechthoekige plattegrond ter breedte van drie dubbele vensterassen, bestaande uit drie bouwlagen. Aan weerszijden bevindt zich een lagere, terugspringende travee met smalle vensters. De met natuursteen beklede gevel is in zijn hoofdvorm geinspireerd op het 17e-eeuwse classicisme met pilasters van de kolossale orde, een hoofdgestel met een geprononceerde kroonlijst en een lage attiekverdieping. De gevel vertoont rijk gebeeldhouwd jugendstilornament, met name in het brede fries onder de kroonlijst, waarin op de stijl van Paul Hankar geinspireerd plantaardig ornament is toegepast. Aan de "Twee Steden" herinneren de gebeeldhouwde wapenschilden van Alkmaar en Enkhuizen tussen de eerste en tweede verdieping, alsmede de kronen op de hoekpostamenten van de attiek. Al het beeldhouwwerk is vervaardigd door de beeldhouwer M.J. Hack. De paarsgewijs gekoppelde vensters bezitten T-ramen en kleine roeden in de bovenlichten. Bij de verbouwing tot bioscoop zijn de drie rondbogen met omlijstend beeldhouwwerk in de parterre, waarvan de rechter de ingang bevatte, door een moderne ingangspartij vervangen. De vensters van de eerste verdieping bezitten segmentvormig uitgebouwde balkons met smeedijzeren hekken in Sezessionstil. Het interieur dat feestzalen bevatte, is grotendeels gemoderniseerd. Wel intact is het trappenhuis in de rechtertravee als gaaf voorbeeld van Mutters' interieurkunst. De in marmer uitgevoerde trap bezit een smeedijzeren leuning met rijk gedecoreerde eindpaal waarop een sierlantaarn, de wanden worden door pilasters geleed en consoles vertonen beeldhouwwerk. Het smeedijzerwerk is uitgevoerd in aan de Sezession ontleende vormen; de sculptuur is hier beinvloed door de Javaanse kunst. Het trappenhuis bezit voorts glas-in-lood ramen en een eerste steen, waarop de bouwjaren 1904 - 1906 zijn vermeld. Waardering.

Building on a rectangular floor plan the width of three double window bays, consisting of three storeys. On either side is a lower, recessed bay with narrow windows. The facade clad with natural stone is in its principal form inspired by 17th-century Classicism with pilasters of the colossal order, a main cornice with a pronounced cornice and a low attic storey. The facade displays richly sculptured Jugendstil ornament, in particular in the broad frieze under the cornice, in which plant-like ornament inspired by the style of Paul Hankar is applied. The coats of arms of Alkmaar and Enkhuizen carved between the first and second storeys, as well as the crowns on the corner pedestals of the attic, recall "De Twee Steden". All the sculptured work was executed by sculptor M.J. Hack. The paired windows possess T-frames and small glazing bars in the fanlights. Upon conversion to cinema the three round arches with surrounding sculptured work on the ground floor, of which the right one contained the entrance, were replaced by a modern entrance. The windows of the first floor possess segmentally projecting balconies with wrought-iron railings in Sezession style. The interior which contained festive halls is largely modernised. However intact is the staircase in the right bay as a fine example of Mutters' interior art. The staircase executed in marble possesses a wrought-iron banister with richly decorated newel post topped by an ornamental lantern, the walls are divided by pilasters and consoles display sculptured work. The wrought-ironwork is executed in forms derived from the Sezession; the sculpture is here influenced by Javanese art. The staircase moreover possesses leaded-light windows and a foundation stone on which the building years 1904-1906 are inscribed. Valuation.
Facade and staircase are of architectural-historical value as a rare example of building in the style of the Wiener Sezession. Also of importance within the development of the oeuvre of J. Mutters.
