Omschrijving
Omschrijving.

Description
Description.
Ponds, transept, pergola, garden and fencing, belonging to the Haags Gemeentemuseum. The museum building is separated from the Stadhouderslaan by two rectangular ponds of different sizes. The design deliberately chose a considerable distance between the museum and the Stadhouderslaan in order to ensure tranquility. Between the ponds is the transept, whose entrance on the Stadhouderslaan is flanked by two brick pylons. Via the transept one reaches the great hall of the museum building. Above the entrance is a faience figurine with the coat of arms of Den Haag, made by J. Altorf. The connecting passage is, like the museum, constructed from a concrete skeleton structure, clad with yellow brick. The long sides are enclosed with glass. Between the auditorium at the rear of the museum building and the pavilion is the wooden pergola. The complex is separated from the street by small brick walls, on which is a layer of iron fencing. The inner garden and the garden layout around the building with the ponds were deliberately laid out to enhance the intended effect of a museum visit. The original design with red tiled paths and green lawns is symbolic of the conception of the garden as a transition from "culture" to "nature". Appreciation.
Ponds, transept, pergola, garden and fencing are, as part of the Haags Gemeentemuseum complex, architecturally and culturally valuable as an example of rational design, strongly influenced by Frank Lloyd Wright; also significant in the development of Berlage's oeuvre.
