The register's description

Omschrijving.

Description.

Museum building on complex plan, constructed from building volumes of varying heights set back in relation to each other, partly under flat roofs and partly under glazed roofs. The loadbearing structure is of reinforced concrete, clad with yellow brick. From the expressive brickwork bond, it can be read that this fulfils a facing and not a structural function. The concrete structure is largely left exposed in the interior. Doors and windows are of bronze. The concrete gutterlines and lintels are clad with copper. The roof water downpipes are likewise of copper. In the right wing are housed the great hall with staircase, service rooms and auditorium. The various spaces, through their cubistic composition, are perceptible from the outside as clearly distinguishable building blocks from one another. The architectural highlight is the great hall plastered in terra nova with recessed coloured tiles between the wall surfaces of the concrete skeletal structure and earthenware floor tiles of various colours laid in patterns. The sculptured relief in the hall is a design by W. van Konijnenburg, executed by Dirk Bus. On the left side are the four wings of the actual exhibition spaces, consisting of galleries and cabinets, which are grouped around an inner courtyard. The galleries are situated so as to avoid distant perspectives. Glazed roofs in the form of gabled roofs provide daylight to the galleries on the first storey. In these roofs is a sophisticated system of blinds and special types of glass were used to be able to regulate the daylight. At the four corners around the inner courtyard are situated staircases. Many spaces are provided with lowered ceilings of perforated metal; white-plastered walls. The original rubber on the floors has been replaced by parquet almost everywhere. Particularly on the ground floor, the layout has been greatly altered after 1945. The layout on the first storey with cabinets and central corridor situated around the inner courtyard from which the various exhibition spaces are accessible, is virtually authentic. Appraisal.

Museum building as part of the Haags Gemeentemuseum complex of architectural-historical value as an example of a rational, strongly Frank Lloyd Wright-influenced design; also of importance within the development of Berlage's oeuvre. Of cultural-historical and typological value as an example of museum architecture which, in its time, met in a forward-thinking manner the requirements placed on the exhibition of art. Because of its striking location along the Stadhouderslaan, the complex is of urban-planning value.
