Inleiding.
Voormalig modemagazijn uit 1909 op de hoek van de Spuistraat-Hofweg in de historiserende stijl van de "Um Achtzehnhundert Beweging", gebouwd voor de firma B.J. Voss & Zonen naar ontwerp van de architecten J. Jacot en W.Oldewelt. In 1914 aan de zijde van de Hofweg door A. Jacot uitgebreid in dezelfde vormgeving.
Omschrijving
Pand op samengestelde plattegrond bestaande uit kelder, vijf bouwlagen en kapverdieping onder het oorspronkelijk met leien gedekte mansardedak. Aan de Spuistraat telt het pand vier, aan de Hofweg zeven vensterassen. De hoek Spuistraat-Hofweg bezit een afgeronde hoekpartij. Oorspronkelijk telde de gevel aan de Hofweg 5 vensterassen. In 1914 is deze gevel naar aanleiding van de Hofwegdoorbraak door Jacot in identieke stijl uitgebreid met twee vensterassen. Toen is ook de oorspronkelijk smallere vijfde travee verbreed. De gevels zijn op de verdiepingen geheel met zandsteen bekleed. De parterre, geleed door granieten pilasters met vrij opgevatte Jonische kapitelen, wordt afgesloten door een fors hoofdgestel, waarboven de gevel verticaal wordt geleed door rijzige, over alle verdiepingen doorlopende, pilasters waarvan de Jonische kapitelen een versiering met wapenschilden bezitten. In het fries van de scheiding tussen parterre en verdieping is langs de gevel in de Spuistraat de naam "B.J. Voss & Zonen" in zandsteen aangebracht. De gevels bezitten een golvend beloop doordat de vensterassen aan weerszijden van de hoekpartij enigszins convex zijn uitgevoerd en de andere traveeën beurtelings door kleine balkons en erkers, beide met borstweringen,worden verlevendigd. De ingangstravee op de hoek vertoont boven de - in recente tijd gemoderniseerde - entree een balkon met borstwering en siervazen in Lodewijk XVI-trant. De geprofileerde omlijsting waarbinnen de vensters in de hoektravee zijn gevat, heeft een segmentvormige bekroning met het gebeeldhouwde, door bladwerk omgeven stadswapen. In de zijgevels bezitten de vensters van de derde verdieping kroonlijsten met frontonvormig gebogen middenstuk. Tussen de vensterreeksen bevinden zich gebeeldhouwde festoenversieringen en consoles. Boven de uitstekende kroonlijst loopt aan de dakvoet een natuurstenen balustrade met siervazen. De hoekpartij wordt bekroond door een dakkapel in getoogde omlijsting van natuursteen met daarboven een houten lantaarn met festoenversieringen en een koepelbekroning. Ook boven de laatste travee aan de Hofwegzijde is een lantaarn met koepeldak op het dak aangebracht. De oorspronkelijke etalageruiten tussen de pilasters zijn vanaf het midden van de jaren vijftig meerdere malen gemoderniseerd.
Waardering
Winkelpand architectuurhistorisch van waarde als kenmerkend voorbeeld van de, door architect Jacot veel toegepaste, historiserende vormgeving in de stijl van de "Um Achtzehnhundert Beweging". Description
Building on composite ground plan consisting of a basement, five storeys and a roof storey under the originally slate-covered mansard roof. On the Spuistraat the building has four, on the Hofweg seven window bays. The corner Spuistraat-Hofweg has a rounded corner part. Originally the facade on the Hofweg had 5 window bays. In 1914 this facade was extended by Jacot in identical style with two window bays as a result of the Hofweg breakthrough. At the same time the originally narrower fifth bay was widened. The facades are entirely clad with sandstone on the upper floors. The ground floor, articulated by granite pilasters with freely interpreted Ionic capitals, is terminated by a strong main entablature, above which the facade is articulated vertically by tall pilasters running across all storeys, whose Ionic capitals have decoration with coats of arms. In the frieze of the division between ground floor and upper storey, the name "B.J. Voss & Zonen" is placed in sandstone along the facade on Spuistraat. The facades have a wavy course because the window bays on either side of the corner part are executed somewhat convex and the other bays are enlivened alternately by small balconies and oriels, both with parapets. The entrance bay on the corner shows above the entrance - recently modernised - a balcony with parapet and ornamental vases in Louis XVI style. The profiled surround within which the windows in the corner bay are set has a segmental cresting with the sculptured, surrounded by foliage city coat of arms. In the side facades the windows of the third storey have cornices with frontoon-shaped curved central section. Between the window series are sculptured festoon decorations and consoles. Above the projecting cornice runs a natural stone balustrade with ornamental vases at the eaves. The corner part is crowned by a dormer in arched surround of natural stone with above it a wooden lantern with festoon decorations and a dome cresting. Also above the last bay on the Hofweg side a lantern with dome roof is mounted on the roof. The original showcase windows between the pilasters have been modernised several times since the middle of the 1950s.
Evaluation
Shop building of architectural historical value as a characteristic example of the historicising design much applied by architect Jacot in the style of the "Around Eighteen Hundred Movement". Culturally valuable as one of the most striking expressions of the city formation of the inner city of The Hague, as it took place around the turn of the century. Urbanistically it occupies a prominent place on the corner of the access to the Spuistraat, also in relation to the shop building Spuistraat 74 on the opposite corner.
