WARENHUIS, in oorsprong gebouwd voor Vroom & Dreesman in expressionistische stijl in 1928 naar het ontwerp van de architect J. Kuyt.

Omschrijving
Voorzijde van een warenhuisgebouw; de grotendeels bakstenen gevel is bij de parterre bekleed met een naar voren springend gevelvlak dat boven de parterre door muurdammen in zeven traveeen is verdeeld, waarin smalle, hoge vensters (in oorsprong met stalen kozijnen). Boven deze raampartij is een zware, natuurstenen latei, gedragen door gebeeldhouwde consoles. Hierboven een verdieping met zes vensters waarin driedelige (in oorsprong stalen) kozijnen. Het terugliggende rechter gedeelte van de gevel, gemarkeerd door afgeronde hoeken in het metselwerk, bezit in de parterre een paraboolvormige toegangspoort in natuurstenen omlijsting en daarboven een verticale reeks liggende vensters van het trap- penhuis. Aan de bovenzijde wordt dit bouwdeel bekroond door zwaar, natuurstenen lijstwerk. Met de terugliggende dakverdie- ping en het vooruitspringende, lagere geveldeel vormt deze rechter hoekpartij een plastisch geheel. De parterre bevat voorts teruggerooide brede etalageruiten met ingang in het midden en links een verdiepte, rechthoekige inrijpoort.
Waardering
Het warenhuis is wat betreft de voorzijde van belang vanwege de architectuurhistorische en typologische waarde, als voorbeeld van door de Amsterdamse School beinvloede expressionistische architectuur uit de jaren twintig van de twintigste eeuw en als voorbeeld van geavanceerdewarenhuisarchitectuur uit de genoemde periode.

Description
Front side of a department store building; the largely brick facade is on the ground floor covered with a projecting facade section that above the ground floor is divided by wall piers into seven bays, in which tall, narrow windows (originally with steel frames). Above this window section is a heavy, natural stone lintel, supported by sculptured consoles. Above this a storey with six windows containing three-part (originally steel) frames. The recessed right section of the facade, marked by rounded corners in the brickwork, has on the ground floor a parabolic-shaped entrance portal in natural stone surrounds and above it a vertical series of horizontal windows of the staircase. At the top this building section is crowned by heavy, natural stone moulding. With the recessed roof storey and the projecting, lower facade section this right corner section forms a plastic whole. The ground floor furthermore contains set-back broad display windows with entrance in the middle and on the left a recessed, rectangular vehicle entrance.
Valuation
The department store is important regarding the front side due to its architectural-historical and typological value, as an example of expressionist architecture influenced by the Amsterdam School from the nineteen-twenties and as an example of advanced department store architecture from the said period.
