MARATHONTOREN
Op twintig meter afstand van de Marathonpoort aan de noordelijke zijde gesitueerde vrijstaande MARATHONTOREN van 42,19 meter hoogte, opgetrokken in gewapend beton met bekleding van baksteen op een vierkante sokkel, die zich sprongsgewijze versmalt en omgeven is door gemetselde bloembakken. De in zijn hoogte aan de lengte van de Marathonloop refererende toren is vanaf de tweede bouwlaag rondom voorzien van telkens acht smalle verticale vensterstroken (in oorsprong gevuld met glasstenen) bij de ingesprongen hoeken.
Bovenaan bevat de toren een viertal door ver uitstekende betonnen luifels overdekte balkons, in oorsprong bestemd voor de opstelling van de bazuinblazers bij de openings- en sluitingsceremonie van de Olympische Spelen (en naderhand aan de stadszijde voorzien van de vijf - elektrisch te verlichten - kleurige Olympische ringen).
In de in verspringende cubische vormen uitgevoerde opbouw boven de luifels een viertal rechthoekige galmgaten met boven en onder schuin geplaatste klankborden in beton, in oorsprong bestemd voor de luidsprekers. De toren wordt verder bekroond door een op een cilinder met blokvormige ornamenten steunende conische schaal, in oorsprong bestemd voor het branden van het Olympisch vuur.
Boven de sokkel aan de westzijde een blijkens inscriptie door de Nederlandsche Sportbonden geplaatste gedenksteen.
Waardering Marathontoren, uitgevoerd in de voor het werk van Wils kenmerkende zakelijk-expressionistische trant van algemeen belang wegens de architectuur-, cultuur- en sporthistorische waarde en als symbool van de Olympische Spelen in Nederland bij uitstek; tevens van belang als tweede hoofd-onderdeel van het Olympisch Stadion-complex.

Description
MARATHON TOWER
A free-standing MARATHON TOWER, situated at a distance of twenty metres from the Marathon Gate on the northern side, 42.19 metres in height, constructed in reinforced concrete with a brick facing on a square base, which narrows in steps and is surrounded by masonry flower boxes. The tower, whose height references the length of the Marathon race, is provided from the second storey upwards all around with eight narrow vertical window strips each (originally filled with glass bricks) at the recessed corners.
At the top, the tower contains four balconies covered by far-projecting concrete canopies, originally intended for the positioning of trumpet players during the opening and closing ceremony of the Olympic Games (and subsequently provided on the city-facing side with the five - electrically illuminable - coloured Olympic rings).
In the stepped cubic forms of the structure above the canopies, four rectangular sound apertures with slanted sound boards in concrete placed above and below, originally intended for the loudspeakers. The tower is further crowned by a conical shell resting on a cylinder with block-shaped ornaments, originally intended for the burning of the Olympic flame.
Above the base on the west side a commemorative stone placed, as evidenced by inscription, by the Dutch Sports Associations.
