Omschrijving
Breyerskameren. Vrijwoningen behorende tot een complex bestaande uit drie delen uit verschillende perioden. Een blok, van oorspronkelijk acht rug aan rug kameren, gebouwd in de eerste helft van de 17e eeuw, grenzend aan de Wittevrouwensingel en thans (na restauratie en samenvoeging in 1975) bestaande uit Gasthuisstraat 2,4 en 6 en Wittevrouwensingel 13 (reeds geplaatst op de Rijksmonumentenlijst).
Het tweede, thans onderhavige, deel bestaat uit Gasthuisstraat 8, 10, 12, 14 en 16 en Wittevrouwensingel 21, 22, 23, 24 en 25. Dit 18e-eeuwse uit tien rug aan rug kameren bestaande deel is gebouwd dankzij een testament van Johan Breyer uit 1749, die zowel de oude als de nieuwe kameren als vrijwoningen schonk aan de Diakonie van de Nederduits Hervormde Kerk.
Tussen deze beide delen bevindt zich het derde complex-deel bestaande uit twee in 1975 in oude stijl gebouwde woningen ter vervanging van de toen gesloopte vroeg 20e-eeuwse bebouwing. Description
Breyer Chambers. Detached dwellings belonging to a complex consisting of three parts from different periods. A block, originally consisting of eight back-to-back chambers, built in the first half of the 17th century, adjoining the Wittevrouwensingel and now (after restoration and consolidation in 1975) consisting of Gasthuisstraat 2, 4 and 6 and Wittevrouwensingel 13 (already placed on the National Monuments Register).
The second, present, part consists of Gasthuisstraat 8, 10, 12, 14 and 16 and Wittevrouwensingel 21, 22, 23, 24 and 25. This 18th-century part, consisting of ten back-to-back chambers, was built thanks to a testament of Johan Breyer from 1749, who donated both the old and the new chambers as detached dwellings to the Diaconate of the Dutch Reformed Church.
Between these two parts is situated the third complex section consisting of two dwellings built in 1975 in the old style in replacement of the early 20th-century buildings then demolished. This previous building, consisting of two upper and lower dwellings, was built at the beginning of this century in place of the former small square with pump between complex parts one and two.
This part is not eligible for placement on the monuments list.
The present, second-mentioned, part is of architectural-historical importance as an example of a fairly well-preserved series of 18th-century detached dwellings, adjacent to an older 17th-century complex section, and of historical importance on account of the history of the formation of the total complex.
