Omschrijving

Description
PARAPET WALL, BRIDGE, BALUSTRADE AND RETAINING WALL AROUND THE CASTLE MOAT.
Red brick parapet wall in two sections on the south and east sides of the castle, which also retains the garden and park sections on these sides towards the castle moat. On the moat side the parapet wall is articulated by a marl stone cordon moulding. The underlying retaining wall is constructed in red brick with marl stone blocks on a rustic foundation. At the level of the northern half of the east side, the wall continues as a retaining wall. On the north side the wall drops just above water level and continues at right angles on the west side. The parapet wall, which is topped with lightly arched sandstone handrails, curves at its west and north ends in a quarter-circle arch to the ground and here is fitted with a shoulder piece with a block-shaped sandstone base, upon which sits a sandstone urn-shaped ornamental piece. At the level of the gate on the field side of the east wing, both sections of the parapet wall curve inward and function here as a balustrade of a red brick double arch bridge. Midway along both arches the balustrade swings at right angles as a sandstone base inward; on the base sits a sandstone spherical ornamental piece. The narrower section of the bridge is flanked by a simple wrought iron balustrade.
Against the SE corner of the castle moat, on the east side in the parapet wall a semi-circular passage, approximately the size of the arch of the double arch bridge and ending in a wall of rustic, through which via a pipe from the hydraulic pump located behind it water is discharged into the moat. From photographs dating before the restoration of 1881-1886, it can be seen that the water originally continued further and that the semi-circular passage is a remnant of a single arch bridge. In the SW corner of the castle moat a staircase with sandstone steps and an adjacent sandstone culvert to the Maas. In the NE corner of the castle moat in the retaining wall a semi-circular curved niche with keystone.
As such the parapet wall, retaining wall and double arch bridge date from the 17th century. The quarter-circle chamfer at the west and north ends of the parapet wall and the shoulder pieces present here, as well as the urn- and spherical ornamental pieces date probably from the years 1881-1886, when the castle was restored. The wrought iron balustrade was added earlier, as it is visible as such in a photograph from before the restoration.
