The register's description

HOOFDGEBOUW.

MAIN BUILDING. One of the most monumental examples of 19th-century country houses in the Netherlands inspired by 16th-century Italian villas.

Large square building of three storeys, designed with a shallow sloping roof and rooms grouped around an inner courtyard, which, after construction begun in 1884 according to a final design from 1883 by C. Muysken was halted, served as an unoccupied eye-catcher in the park until during the Second World War it was provided with interior finishes and a roof deviating from the design for and on behalf of the German occupying power.

The facades, erected in the style of the Italian High Renaissance and provided with originally balustraded central risalits, show a division into a base, two storeys separated by a moulding and closed off by a main cornice furnished in the risalits with rows of consoles, enclosed by toothed corner blocks, and a high attic storey likewise closed off by a main cornice, accentuated at the corners by pilasters with applied panels; the wall surfaces are of rendered brickwork, the decorative parts of natural stone.

The facades further each show their own composition, described as follows:

THE SOUTH OR ENTRANCE FACADE, of which the base is clad with rustication, has a far projecting central risalit built above a loggia on the main storey of three bays and side sections, each of two bays.

The loggia, accessible via a frontal flight of steps, has coupled Tuscan columns at the division of the bays and at the corners a similar column coupled with a square Tuscan pillar, all on low bases; the closure is formed by a main cornice of which the frieze above the aforementioned supports is furnished with triglyphs. The rear wall is articulated by Tuscan pilaster pairs corresponding to the columns and pillars; the (wider) middle bay contains the entrance door, the side bays shallow round-arched recesses, provided at their foot with convex consoles.

On the upper storey the bays on the front of the risalit are framed by coupled Ionic pilasters on high bases; similar half pilasters close off the sides of the risalit. This contains here a broad central window and four narrower side windows, two of which at the sides; these windows are framed by Tuscan pilasters and crowned by a heavy main cornice which moreover carries a curved pediment above the central window. In the wainscot zone balustrads are placed below the windows.

In the attic storey the risalit likewise contains pairs of Ionic pilasters on the front and similar half pilasters at the rear on the sides, between which windows corresponding to the bay width in ornate frames.

The side sections of the facade contain on the main and upper storeys windows in ornate frames, of which those on the main storey are crowned by mouldings and those on the upper storey by curved pediments; the frames and crownings rest on consoles; on the attic storey windows are placed between plinth and main cornice that are framed by Tuscan pilasters.

THE NORTH FACADE, which is provided with basement windows in the base, is virtually identical to the south facade, but has a less projecting central risalit which on both the main and upper storeys is treated as a loggia with undecorated rear wall and due to its lesser width in the middle bay is articulated by only a few columns, respectively pilasters. The loggias contain on each storey three simple windows, of which the central one below as a garden door gives access to a curved flight of steps. The upper loggia is provided with balustrads between the pilaster bases.

THE EAST FACADE is provided with a broad, only slightly projecting central risalit of three bays which on the main storey is framed by Tuscan and on the upper storey and attic storey by Ionic coupled pilasters and separated, above which triglyphs are placed in the frieze of the lower main cornice. The risalit contains on the main storey three windows, which break through the wainscot zone as garden doors and are framed in ornate surrounds above, and on the upper storey three round-arched pediment-crowned frames on consoles; beneath the windows balustrads extend between the pilaster bases. In the attic storey windows are located as those in the south and north facades.

The narrow side sections of the facade each contain on each storey a three-light window articulated and framed by Tuscan pilasters. On the attic storey these window groups occupy the entire height between plinth and main cornice; on the main storey they are treated as a garden door with side windows and crowned by a moulding on consoles; on the upper storey they are supported by consoles below the pilasters and crowned by a moulding on consoles which moreover carries a curved pediment above the central window.

Separately described terraces adjoin the facade.

THE WEST FACADE, resting on a base clad with rustication, is strongly distinguished from the other facades by the presence on the main storey of two five-sided bay windows against the side sections, between which a three-sided projecting terrace provided with balustrads and accessible via a curved flight of steps is placed. The facade further has a broad, slightly projecting central risalit of five narrow bays which are separated by single pilasters and framed by coupled pilasters; as in the other facades these pilasters have Tuscan capitals on the main storey and Ionic capitals on the other storeys. On the main storey the risalit contains a door above which a festoon and on either side two framed round-arched windows (the inner window apertures originally contained small rectangular windowpanes and were otherwise blind); on the upper storey are five windows crowned by main cornices of which the outermost are framed by Tuscan pilasters and rest on balustrads in the wainscot zone; the three inner windows fill the entire spaces between the pilasters and originally extended lower deeper; on the attic storey the risalit contains narrow windows of the type that the other facades also show here.

The side sections of the facade are occupied on the main storey by the aforementioned bay windows of which the corners are accentuated by angled Tuscan pilasters between which the entire space is filled by windows. The platform above each bay window is provided with a balustrade as a balcony. On the upper and attic storeys three-light windows are located here as in the east facade; the central window of these gives as a door access to the balcony.
