Omschrijving
De VESTINGWERKEN van Klundert. Algemeen.

Description
The FORTIFICATIONS of Klundert. General. Of the defence works, laid out in 1584-1588 by the engineer Adriaan Anthonisz., a portion still remains, namely the bastions, earthen rampart and ditch on the north side, and on the south side across the already extended Rode Vaart, the crown work Suykerbergh, in whose ditch a brick artillery platform on which two brick "monks" with sandstone dome-shaped cover, restored in 1948. Where the Bottekreek cuts through the rampart on the north side at Verlaatstraat, there is still a bridge in yellow brick, with in the voussoir of the arch the date 1769. Details. The western bastion, the two southern bastions and the two half bastions at the dike have, compared with the perimeter of the fortification as published in the Blau atlas, completely disappeared into the present buildings. Likewise it appears that the reconstructed Suykerbergh hornwork deviates considerably from the original design. Blauwe Sluisdijk-Schanspoort. From the course of the ditch, the slopes along the Beatrijsweg and the Kerkhof it might with difficulty still be determined to what extent this section forms part of the fortifications. The features still present are however of such a minor nature that this area does not come into consideration for protection. Schanspoort-Blauwhoefseweg. Still clearly recognizable are: The bastions, earthen rampart on the north side. The bastions have like the intermediate curtain a moderately high slope, with wide berm in front. The main rampart of the most eastern bastion is planted with fine trees. The main rampart of the western bastion is a single rampart. Of the southern bastion only the right flank is still somewhat profiled. In the curtain, where it is cut through by the Bottekreek, there is still a bridge (the outlet) in yellow brick, with in the voussoir of the arch the date 1769. The fortification ditch. Fine ditch, which west of the Bottekreek is largely overgrown with reeds. The Envelope. The envelope situated on the north side of the ditch is entirely excavated, in use as horticultural land. The envelope is bounded on the north side by an outer ditch completely overgrown with reeds. Monument list. The section outlined in black on the accompanying ground plan comes into consideration to be placed on the monument list. Blauw-Hoefseweg-Stoofdijk. Nowhere have features been found which could be an indication that a fortification rampart was here. Stoofdijk-Blauwe Sluisdijk. Section south of 't Walletje and Zevenbergseweg. Found were a slope with outer ditch, which is largely overgrown with reeds; two projecting redans, largely excavated. The northern redan, built with fine bungalows bears the name "Menno van Coehoorn" bastion. This section probably formed part of the hornwork, which protected the crown work "Suykerberch". The crown work "Suykerberch". The crown work Suykerberch, originally situated on the south side of the Rode Vaart, covered the fortification on the south side. The crown work consists of three bastions with connecting curtines. It has high faces and flanks; the slope is not particularly steep (circa 40 degrees). Over the narrow crest of the main rampart, walking path with fine trees on both sides. Before the main rampart narrow berm. The eastern bastion is connected by long curtine with the half-bastion situated at the Blauwe Sluisdijk. The gorge side of the bastion is built with villas. The fortification ditch. Fine wide ditch, which on the east side is bounded by an envelope, which formed part of the original hornwork. On the envelope still narrow low sconce present. The Outer ditch. The envelope is surrounded by the outer ditch. In the ditch tall stone artillery platform with two monks. The masonry of the platform is seriously damaged. In the outer ditch the "Rode Vaart", now only a narrow drainage ditch, ends.
