The register's description

Dissecting theatre with burial ground designed by city architect Zeger Reijers in 1828 and laid out in 1830. The dissecting theatre, erected in neoclassicist (neo-Greek) style, stands on a raised site on the axis of the burial ground and consists of two interlocking building blocks in the form of a cross with short arms. The main block (north-south) is covered by a hipped roof with attic, the transverse block (east-west) has a gabled roof. The dissecting theatre has one storey. The ground floor is occupied by service and guard rooms. The actual dissecting room is located on the upper storey and is lit only diffusely by a skylight. Around the middle of the nineteenth century a conservatory-like extension was built against the south side. The windows display nineteenth-century character. In 1938 an auditorium was built against the north side, to which end the cordonata, being the broad stairway to the dissecting room, was removed. Two large stained glass panels by Pieter A.H. Hofman, signed and dated (fecit 1938), have been installed in the auditorium, depicting Christ with the Sword of Justice and Saint Michael fighting the dragon. The simplicity of Zeger Reijers' design, the white wall surfaces, the design module of 55 cm. (derived from the diameter of the column in the portico on the upper storey) and the absence of decoration lend the dissecting theatre an important part of its architectural-historical value. Reijers' oeuvre has been very sparsely preserved: the dissecting theatre is one of the few examples of his surviving work. Within the history of Dutch architecture the dissecting theatre as a building commission is very rare and a specific, monumental expression of Romanticism with noteworthy cultural-historical value.
