Exterior description and setting

Long single storey (mainly) thatched house at the end of a long winding lane to the N of the Trench Road, c.3 miles N of Killinchy. This house is situated on a hill top with a spectacular view of Strangford Lough.

Front N facade has a left of centre stable door with four smallish evenly spaced windows to the right having PVC frames with simulated Georgian panes. This section of the facade represents the original section of the house (which has a thatched roof). To the left of this section is a partly glazed door with three unevenly spaced windows to the far left. This section used to be the byre at one stage but was converted to become part of the dwelling house.

The E gable has a window much as front and a similar attic window directly above.

The W gable is blank.

To the rear are eight unevenly spaced windows of various sizes but generally small. Between the fifth and sixth window is a small slightly projecting flat roofed porch with timber sheeted door to the E face and a small fixed light window to the S face.

The entire facade is finished in rough cast. The roof is gabled and mainly thatched but the ‘byre’ section to the E has Bangor blue slates. Three short rendered chimney stacks. PVC rw goods.

Long line of single storey outbuildings to W, sections of which were formerly dwellings.

Historical information

Although a building matching the size and location of this property is shown on the OS map of 1834, it is not recorded in the (near) contemporary valuation. The current owner has a printed sale poster dating from May 1841 when the lease of the property was being put on the market by the then resident a James Dalzell. The second valuation of 1861 tells us that the building was split into two properties at that point, occupied by a James [?]Savan and a William McCully respectively, with the aforementioned James Dalzell (or a relative of the same name) listed as the immediate lessor. The properties do not appear to have been of equal size as the rateable value of one is recorded as £1-5-0 and the other as 10/-.

Located at the end of a long winding lane to the N. of the Trench Road, 3 miles N of Killinchythis house is on a hill top with a spectacular view of Strangford Lough. Long single storey farm house of pre 1834 origin in the traditional vernacular mould with thatched roof and small irregularly spaced openings. The whole ensemble is marred only by the inclusion of PVC windows.
