Exterior description and setting

Two storey modern (c.1980) house built around the fabric of an older single and two storey farmhouse, set on the E side of the Tullynakill Road, c.2.5 miles N of Killinchy.

Part of the N half of this house contains the fabric (i.e. part of the rubble walls) of the two storey section of the older dwelling, but to all intents and purposes the older house has been demolished and replaced with a modern building which bears no resemblance to its predecessor, either in terms of plan form, window and door arrangement, window frames and doors, roof and roof covering etc.
The owner confirmed that the old house had been largely demolished.

Historical information

A building is shown on this site on the OS maps of 1834 and 1859-60. The valuation records of c.1835 are somewhat confusing as regards who was in possession of the house at that stage, though it may have been a Robert Kelly whilst the second valuation survey of c.1861 tell us that by that time the building was in the hands of the ‘representatives of Henry Boal’ (who had leased in from Samuel Murland). The early nineteenth century house was probably mainly, if not wholly, single storey.

The property was largely demolished in the early 1980s and the new dwelling constructed around a section of what remained.

Evaluation

Large modern two storey house which incorporates some of the fabric (i.e. a section of the walls) of an earlier farm house of probably originally built before 1834, but enlarged in subsequent years. This house bears no resemblance to its predecessor.
