Exterior description and setting

Long, single storey gabled house, with recent rear extension, set on a rise at the end of a lane to the E of the Tullynakill Road, c.3.5 miles N of Killinchy.

Front (SW) facade has a left of centre timber panelled door with two pane sidelights. To the left of this is a window with modern frame, with two similar windows to the right of the door. The NW gable has a similar window to the left. The SE gable is blank.
The left hand side of the rear is dominated by a large single storey extension which was added recently (c.1997), which has modern windows and doors. To the centre and centre right on the rear facade of the main house are two windows as front.

The facade is finished in roughcast (and painted) with a smooth render recessed base. The roof is gabled (with slight overhang) and covered in pan tiles. Three rendered chimney stacks. PVC rw goods.

Historical information

A smaller building is shown on this site on the OS maps of 1834 and 1859-60, which may correspond with a section of the present house, a house which probably took its present form in the later nineteenth century. The building is not noted in the first valuation returns of c.1835 [undoubtedly because it was below rateable value], however by c.1861 it was the property of a Samuel Kelly and was leased to either Robert Kelly or Martha Coey.

The last section of the thatch was removed in 1980 (and the whole house renovated). The rear extension was added in 1997.

Evaluation

Largely plain single storey house with modern windows, pan tiles and a recent rear extension. This house probably began life pre 1834 as a smaller dwelling and was enlarged in the latter half of the nineteenth century. The last remaining section of the thatch was removed in 1980.
