The Department's description
Exterior description and setting
A single-storey/ three-bay farmhouse facing east in random rubble granite fieldstones, lightly dashed and whitewashed . It has a coped thatch roof secured with rope. There is a chimney on the right gable and another between the first and second bays; both are of rendered random rubble. A door to the right side of the middle bay leads into the leads into kitchen. Single windows in the main façade light each bay; their cills are of granite, but no actual frames survive. The gables and rear elevation are devoid of openings. l
An outhouse abuts the left gable. The complex is now derelict and the thatched roof, now partly covered with felt, is in a particularly poor state. The roof timberwork is original.
Historical information
On the OS map of 1834 a considerably smaller building is shown on this site, however it is not recorded in the contemporary valuation. On the revised OS map of 1859 a much longer building matching the size of the present house is shown. The occupant is recorded in the valuation of 1863 as a John Cousins with the Earl of Kilmorey as the lessor; the very modest rateable value of 15/- is also recorded, but no dimensions or ‘quality letter’ are supplied.

Evaluation
Asingle storey,three bay vernacular farmhouse facing east in random rubble granite fieldstones, lightly dashed and whitewashed. It has a traditional direct-entry plan form and rooms to either side of central kitchen unit. It is the only house in Annalong Ward to retain its original pegged roof trusses and rope thatching, and probably one of the very few in Mourne still to do so. It is thus of national interest in terms of regional vernacular architecture. Its linear development is also of interest in showing how it expanded.
