Exterior description and setting

A single-storey, single bay thatched building aligned roughly N-S to centre of Crockada Td.

Pitched thatch roof tied with ropes. No chimneys or rainwater goods. Walls are rubble stone with whitewashed façade.

Principal elevation faces E. It has a door opening to left and a window opening to right. All other elevations are blank. The right gable is abutted by a lower and narrower shed.

To the immediate S of this dwelling is a much altered single-storey house and to SE is a lime-rendered rubble stone outbuilding.

Historical information

A building is shown on this site on the OS map of 1834-35, but not noted in the contemporary valuation; it was undoubtedly too modest a property to be considered for rating. The second valuation of c.1862 lists the occupant as a Terence Creighan, who leased the house from the occupant of the neighbouring dwelling to the south, Hugh Rooney, with the rateable value recorded as 5/-.

Evaluation

A single storey, single bay thatched building retaining all of its original features. On the first OS map of 1834-35, the structure is of at least early nineteenth century origin, but possible earlier. The roof structure, build-up and covering are of particular interest. As an increasingly rare building type within the province, it is worthy of statutory protection.
