The National Monuments Service's description
Situated at the S end of a glacial ridge in undulating countryside with nearby Moyne stream to the S. The site consists of a large circular area (approx. diam. 155m N-S) defined by a field bank of modern appearance from N through E to S, elsewhere there are no visible remains of the bank at ground level (O'Brien 2000, 188). Excavation of part of the interior (dims. 6m N-S x 5m E-W) was undertaken by Paul Stevens in 1998. Excavation revealed evidence of ironworking in the form of a cluster of oval burnt pits and post-holes, rich in ironworking waste, with one containing a broken furnace bowl. The charcoal was radiocarbon dated to AD 450-690. A series of possible slot trenches cut across the ironworking features therefore post-dating the ironworking; these possibly represent internal partitions within the large enclosure. The excavator identified this site as a monastic enclosure associated with St Odran founded before AD 563 or 548 (Stevens 2000, 200). However, according to the early sources Odran founded a monastery at Littir-Odhrain, identified as Latteragh, Co. Tipperary (TN028-025002), where he became abbot (Gwynn and Hadcock 1970, 40).
