Ringfort - rath

In average pasture, located on top of a ridge, at its SW edge where there is a steep fall of ground into the valley of the Gweestion River which is 200m to SW. There are excellent views along the valley, especially to W, and good views also along the spine of the ridge top to N and SE.
Circular platform (38.5m N−S; 29m E−W) defined by a bank/scarp, outside which it is enclosed by a fosse and external bank.
The inner bank (Wth 4.2m; int. H 0.3m; ext. H 2.2m) retains a low internal lip on the S arc, and is reduced to a scarp (H 1.4m; Wth slope 2.3m, at N) elsewhere. The fosse (Wth 3m) and external bank (Wth 2.9m; int. 0.5m; ext. H 0.7m) are well defined at SSE−NNW. At N−E the fosse is evident as a shallow surface depression and there is no trace of the external bank. At E the fosse terminates at a low rise (L 4m) of earth and large stones. This coincides with a section of the rath scarp at E−SE which is very low and broadly slumped, possibly marking an original entrance.
The interior is flat, and is traverses by relict cultivation ridges on a roughly E−W axis. A very slight N−S stony linear feature (L 5m; Wth 0.6m) extends from the inner face of the bank at SSE into the interior.
Grass cover with a few hawthorn trees around the perimeter. There is a rath (MA071-134----) 200m to NE.
