Ringfort - rath

The National Monuments Service's description

On SW-facing slope, in an unplanted green area surrounded by forestry, in the angle of two forest roads, in the SE foothills of the Slievefelim Mountains. Depicted on the revised 1924 ed. OS 25-inch map as a suboval-shaped enclosure directly abutting a small field to NE. Monument surveyed by the ASI in 1999 and described as a raised roughly D-shaped area (26.2m E-W; 21.2m N-S) enclosed by a low bank mainly reduced to a scarp (Wth 1.6m; H 0.3m) from ENE-S-W-NW that has been incorporated into a linear field boundary across the NE sector. Some small rubble boulders are consistently on top of the scarped edge, which may represent field clearance or stone which has been exposed from the fabric of the bank due to livestock erosion. The interior has a SW-facing slope. A single upright slab (H 0.37m; Wth 0.22; T 0.1m) which is triangular-shaped in elevation, protrudes from the top of the scarp at W. Some irregular-shaped slabs (L 0.3m; Wth 0.3m; T 0.8m) have been deposited in the W sector to form a low cairn-like feature. It is possible that this ringfort may have been reused as a children’s burial ground. Visible as an oval-shaped monument on Google Earth orthoimage taken 25/05/2017.
