The National Monuments Service's description
Within Muckross Demesne. Present house built in 1839-43 for Col Rt Hon H.A. Herbert, MP. Bence-Jones (1990, 220) describes it as 'large cut-stone Elizabethan-Revival mansion by William Burn ...Stepped gables with pointed finials; mullioned windows, many oriels; tall chimneys. A porte-cochere was added ca 1870...' A walled garden lies adjacent to the E. Also within the Demesne are the sites of three earlier houses: the first (KE074-027---), dating to the early 18th-century, c. 1km to the W; the second (KE074-028---), dating to c. 1770, c. 450m to the N; the third (KE074-029---), Torc Cottage, c. 1.5km to the SSW. A possible former estate manager's house, known as Arthur Vincent House, stands c. 500m to the NW; two-storey three-bay house with hipped roof, of early 19th-century appearance. Immediately to the E of this are the overgrown ruins of a stable yard associted with the 1770s house. Other features on the demesne include gate lodges, boathouses, estate cottages, quays (KE074-043----, KE074-042----) and bridges (including KE074-040----).
