The National Monuments Service's description

In Charleville. Rectangular church; walls rendered with ashlar limestone quoins exposed. Central wide round-headed door flanked by narrower doors, in entrance gable on SE side; keystone on central door inscribed with date '1812'. Access to interior not gained. Described by Lewis (1837, vol. 1, 324) as 'ornamented with quoins, cornices and window mouldings of hewn stone; the altar is large and remarkably elegant, and is embellished with several paintings of superior execution; a handsome cupola was added to the chapel in 1829'. Replaced in 1900 by present Catholic Church to NW. Subsequently converted to 2-storey structure, and now used as parochial hall; Corinthian reredos (photograph O'Riordan 1986, 91) retained as stage.

The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
