La crémaillère s'inscrit dans un ensemble d'ouvrages fortifiés destinés à protéger le massif d'une occupation provenant du front oriental dont les pentes douces permettent une escalade facile depuis La Valette. Entre la fin des années 1830 et 1868, plusieurs projets de dispositifs d'arrêt furent conçus, s'appuyant sur un fossé courant de la Croix Faron au fort Faron. L'ouvrage existant fut réalisé entre 1868 et 1877. Il est constitué par un fossé à crochets formant une barrière. Ce fossé est parsemé de positions d'artillerie destinées à compléter l'action défensive du fort Faron. Il est également rythmé de casemates qui assurent son flanquement en cas de tentative de franchissement.

History
The crémaillère is part of a group of fortified works intended to protect the massif from occupation from the eastern front whose gentle slopes allow easy scaling from La Valette. Between the late 1830s and 1868, several projects for stopping devices were conceived, based on a ditch running from Croix Faron to fort Faron. The existing work was built between 1868 and 1877. It is constituted by a ditch with hooks forming a barrier. This ditch is scattered with artillery positions intended to supplement the defensive action of fort Faron.
