Le front fortifié nord et nord-ouest est dressé entre 1875 et 1878 par l'empire allemand. History
The northern and north-western fortified front was erected between 1875 and 1878 by the German Empire. This fortification characterises the abandonment of the "neo-Prussian" system in favour of the simplified polygonal system, in conjunction with the surrounding belt of distant forts. Each bastion with cavalier consists, from outside to inside: of a water-filled ditch; of an earth embankment forming a slope, with armoured casemate in the lower part, curtain and artillery crest; of barracks, artillery workshop, powder magazine on the gorge side; of ancillary buildings (artillery material magazines) limiting the weapons parade ground of the barracks.
