Dès l'armistice, un comité indépendant lança le projet d'un monument commémoratif. L'idée fut reprise en 1921 par le conseil municipal. Malgré l'important financement nécessaire, le projet fut accepté. Le concours fut remporté par l'architecte L. Barthelet qui avait proposé une iconographie hostile à la guerre, insistant sur les ravages qu'elle provoquait. Le projet original devait également comporter des cascades d'eau qui symboliseraient le souvenir perpétuel. Le monument fut inauguré en 1925. Placée à l'origine place du Cantin, l'oeuvre fut transférée à son emplacement actuel en 1972.

History
From the armistice, an independent committee launched the project of a commemorative monument. The idea was taken up again in 1921 by the municipal council. Despite the substantial financing required, the project was accepted. The competition was won by the architect L. Barthelet who had proposed an iconography hostile to war, emphasising the ravages it caused. The original project was also to include waterfalls which would symbolise perpetual remembrance. The monument was inaugurated in 1925. Originally placed at Place du Cantin, the work was transferred to its current location in 1972.
