Historique

History
The H.K.B. 4./706 'Stahl' battery was installed in May 1942 at Auderville-la-Roche to the north-west of the Hague headland. It was originally equipped with six French guns installed in open emplacements and served by numerous ammunition stores of Regelbau 134 or Vf7a type, while the barracks disappeared after the war. From the summer of 1943, the site was reconfigured with the construction of a fire control post or Leitstand of Regelbau 636 type, of several shelters intended for the barracks of the troops (two type 621 shelters, three of type 622 of which one is absent from this inventory) as well as numerous barracks made of wood and brick now disappeared. Several Flak guns came to reinforce anti-aircraft defence. In December 1943, H.K.B. 4./706 was renamed H.K.B. 1./1262. In March 1944, the construction of four casemates of Regelbau 679 type was begun but was not completed. Integrated into a vast defensive system (Stützpunkt 351), the battery was subjected to a massive bombardment by American aviation on 29 June 1944, in order to accelerate the conquest of the north-western extremity of the Cotentin peninsula. Important combat was undertaken before the capture of the Hague headland by the Americans on 1 July 1944. The fire control post was equipped with significant technical apparatus: besides a close-protection tobrouk, an upper tank was intended to house a rangefinder and another, placed in front, a Seetakt FuMO2 type marine search radar powered by an electric generator installed in a machine shelter located nearby. Certain structures (including the fire control post) are camouflaged with an exterior covering rare and quite remarkable, composed of a mixture of straw, asbestos, powdered rubber and cement (called Asbest). The site numbers 24 elements in total.
