Cet ouvrage est le premier phare français construit sur une roche d'à peine dix mètres de rayon, le Gros-du-Raz, isolée en mer à 800 mètres du cap de la Hague. Morice de la Rüe fit preuve d'innovation en déportant l'escalier sur le côté afin de rendre les pièces indépendantes et améliorer la vie des gardiens. L'ingénieur érigea une tour cylindrique de 52 mètres de haut, d'architecture néo-classique, soulignée d'un astragale et reposant sur une vaste plate-forme dotée d'un double escalier d'accès. Après trois années de travaux, le phare fut allumé en 1837.

History
This work is the first French lighthouse built on a rock of barely ten metres radius, the Gros-du-Raz, isolated at sea 800 metres from cap de la Hague. Morice de la Rüe demonstrated innovation in placing the staircase to the side in order to make the rooms independent and improve the life of the keepers. The engineer erected a cylindrical tower 52 metres high, of neo-classical architecture, emphasised by an astragal and resting on a vast platform furnished with a double access staircase. After three years of works, the lighthouse was lit in 1837.
