L'église est commandée par Eugène Claudius-Petit, maire de Firminy de 1953 à 1971 comme élément d'un centre civique comprenant une unité d'habitations, un stade et une maison de la culture. Le Corbusier réalise les études pour l'église entre 1961 et 1964, mais les travaux ne commenceront qu'en 1971. History
The church is commissioned by Eugène Claudius-Petit, mayor of Firminy from 1953 to 1971 as an element of a civic centre comprising a housing unit, a stadium and a house of culture. Le Corbusier carried out the studies for the church between 1961 and 1964, but work did not begin until 1971. Until 1976, construction in concrete of the first five levels continued, but lack of funds prevented completion of the construction: the church remains unfinished. Work resumed in 2004 under the direction of José Oubrerie who had collaborated on the project, to be completed in 2006. The architectural ensemble of Le Corbusier in Firminy is proposed to appear on the UNESCO world heritage list.
